there is no voltage on the B/R wire with key to on and turn switch disconnected.

 

The wire is powered by the Turn fuse so check that fuse. And the plug being disconnected has no bearing. Turn fuse powers the Violet wire in the front side of connector to X-17 which connects to B/R on the cluster side of the connector.

 

the turn fuse was blown. i replaced it and they are working now!

Satch u sound like an electrical genius. All my switches work properly, but the cluster illumination is intermittent. It wasn't working at all when I got the car 3 weeks ago. I took the whole dash out and reinstalled all and now when I drive at night it will flicker our stay on for minutes at a time. all the switches and heater panel lights do the same. I appreciate any info our ideas to fix the issue.

 

What exactly is flickering? Is it just the gauge lights only or all the dash lights such as the wiper switch, headlight switch, turn signal switch, cigarette lighter illumination included? And my electrical knowledge is a function of reading and listening to those such as HAILERS and others who know/knew the electrical systems upside down.

 

Sounds like the dimmer part of the light switch is wonky.
Try adjusting it to full bright and see what happens.
If it already is maxed out, try slowly dialing it back (with the lights on of course) and see if the flickering stops.

 

Its all of them except the cruise control main light and blinkers and brights. When they are on strong my dimmer adjustment works perfectly so I'm doubting thats the issue

 

The blinkers and brights are part of a different circuit, but the Cruise Control switch light is part of the same circuit so that's a bit puzzling. The Headlight Switch harness has a Red/Green wire that supplies voltage to all of the lights that you have issues with. There is a connector called FC-02 (located near the interior fuse box and has 17 wires) which mates the Front harness to the Cluster harness. If the connection between the Red/Green wire is poor it "could" cause your problem. The problem could also be caused by the Red/Green wire grounding out on a sporadic basis and causing the flickering. And when this problem occurs you need to play with the dimmer dial of the switch to see if this changes anything as Clokker suggested, and you should probably do this first. And lastly, you should also turn the light switch to just the first position as well and see if this changes anything as far as does it stop the flickering. Since the switch has two positions the contact within the switch might be at fault.

 

Last night I went for a ride and adjusted the dimmer switch multiple times. It functioned as it should, but once out of a bunch of times it flickered. More backround on the situation, it is typically completely out/off for half the time driving at night. The left/right turn indicators as well as brights indicator will remain working. I noticed that the temp control switch and fan adjustment switch have a little arrow that light up but the rest doesn't. Also those arrows go out with the cluster. My next question is where is the ground for the cluster circuit?

 

The Black ground wire for the switch also is used for the pop up headlights to either pop them up or retract them. If this wire was your issue then this aspect of your headlights probably would not work as they would pop up and down in a sporadic fashion.

Did you try yet to just turn the switch to the "first" position to see if the problematic lights react in the same manner. This is rather important to do so you can narrow down the source of your problem.

You can depin the Red/Green wire at the Headlight Harness and jumper voltage to it from the Red/Black wire in the same harness and turn the lights on and see if the problem continues or not. If it does not continue then the switch is the cause.

 

so i finally had time to take a look and yes it's the switch. those things are pricy too. anyway thanks for the help.
