some electrical probs, help please?

okay, now i know there was a short circuit or somethin to that in my engine bay closer to the wiring harness thing thats screwed a lil before the tranny.
its an s4 fc3s n/a. i was under there for a couple of hours removing all the old brittle tape and hoses to look at the wires, and i didnt find one toasted or fried wire down there. the reason im looking down there is because i saw a little puff of smoke come from around there when my dad hooked the battery up backwards on accident. my question is.. does anyone have anytips on where or how to pinpoint the fried wire(s)? i hook up the battery the straight wat and both batteries appear to be dead so, i am going to charge it at a local autoparts place and see how it does. nothing in my interior lights up so either the batteries are extremely dead, or the wiring is shot. thanx for any input or suggestions..

If you're lucky, you just blew the main fuse at the strut tower.
That's what's supposed to happen if the battery polarity gets reversed.
With a little more luck, the smoke was a ground wire that got hot, but held on while the fuse blew.

If you were unlucky & the ECU fried, don't overlook the for sale forum here.

i have to rewire my entire car thanks to someone doing a monkey job on it, as long as it turns over and gets spark it should be fine, i would check the ecu and smell to see if it smells bad(fried) if that helps, the wires in my car that were toast were the wires around the fuse box all around the drivers side

the main fuse to go is the egi main in the middle of the fuses near the battery

nah, i didnt smell anything, just feet. i checked the fuses and they were all good except for one that was funny lookin. switched it out. well im almost sure it was just some wire that went up in smoke but didnt mess up too bad, because mostly everything works.. sort of.
well the car tries to stay on, so its half way there? even tho the tach stayed dead the whole time. me and my dad put power to the fuel pump directly, and thats wat kept the engine runnin. the car was on for about 10 min atleast.. but only because of the direct wire to the fuel pump, even so. the tach didnt work, it didnt show anything and the radio... and so on. i cant figure it out, i took out this one relay, hopefully it is the relay. crap, if only someone around here could take a look at it, its like a monkey lookin for a banana in the dark!
