So i need a new alternator but...

So I need a new alternator, and It would cost about $125 for a new one. But I was wondering if there was kit out there to rebuild it instead of getting a new one and hopefully it will save me money.

so the question is, is there a good kit out there to use to rebuil the alternator.

Some shops can rebuild them, but I'm not sure if there's a kit.

I've never seen a rebuild "kit" for an alternator although shops that rebuild them are obviously getting their parts from somewhere.
There are upgrade options that range from the fairly simple-the higher output FD unit, for example- to slightly more involved- the Ford Taurus alt- which are available either used on forums/Craigslist or even picked from a junkyard.

Personally, I've had excellent luck in junkyards so that's where I'd look first.

I had bad luck with junkyard and used alts, I went through 4 of them before having a local shop rebuild it for ~$50. Never had a problem after that.

+1 on the Taurus alt. They're pretty stout.

I'd suggest rebuilt, first, until you get everything else sorted out, for your system, THEN you can decide which way you want to go - FD or Taurus.

I just grabbed a taurus alt today at the junkyard. I'll be swapping it in soon, if you'd like to know how it turns out.
