Smoking RX7 Turbo 2
yeah, the oil seal on the turbine side of your turbo is going bad. good news is that you can get the turbo rebuilt. any decent turbo rebuilder should be able to handle it. will cost a few hundred, but its a heck of a lot cheaper than getting a brand new one through mazdatrix, or the dealer if they even carry them.
Good question.. I've never heard of anyone rebuilding their own turbo charger...
I would upgrade to a BNR stage 3

It could be excessive blow by.
You will know when your turbo ate the seal, it will smoke badly underboost, either black/gray/blue smoke. Also you might able to hear the turbine hitting against the housing.

It's not as difficult as it seems. I have rebuilt quite a few s4 and s5 turbos. There are a few sites that sell rebuild kits, do a Google search. Most kits run around $80-$90. Also search for sites that have DIY info on the teardown and inspection. In addition, if your compressor and turbine wheels are in good enough condition to re-use, make sure you mark the compressor wheel and shaft carefully with a scribe before disassembly. If the shaft nut is ground off on one or more sides for balancing, make sure you mark it's original position with the shaft before teardown. All of the rotating parts are balanced with a great deal of precision in order to keep them from flying apart at rotational speeds in excess of 120,000 rpm. If you discover that you need to replace either wheel, then you will need to have the Center Housing Rotating Assembly (chra) balanced at a turbo shop before the scroll housings are bolted back on. Most turbo shops will do the balancing for around 40 to 60 bucks.
same thing here.. about a drop of oil in the ic inlet and it smokes at idle, only sometimes though, like after driving on the highway and then letting the car sit and idle for a little while.. I was told it was blow-by.
Might want to make sure the you have the crankcase properly venting, for a quick check just take your oil filler neck cap off and see if it continues to smoke. If you want a shop to rebuild your turbo, we off the service; www.turblown.net
