Compression test - most likely u will need to go to mazda dealer. The use a special meter. Ask for comp. test ($100+ ???) That will tell u the condition of the engine.

When the water seals went bad on my 88 TII it did not smoke but it had instant pressure in the radiator hose that would pop it. It was from the engine compression passing the seal into my cooling system. The compression test will tell if you have bad seal. You need a haynes manual for a little help.

It could just be from sitting for so long, I got a '86 base started after sitting for 7 months that smoked like none other for a good 30 minutes and then it cleared up and idled perfectly and never had a problem again. Let it idle for a while and see if it clears up, then shut it off let it cool down and try again.
