so I get my car fired up and get it idling, and I notice smoke coming from around the backside of the Turbo looking like its coming from around the heat shield on the hot side.

I had a bad weld job done on my down pipe flange to the Turbo and it was leaking oil through it down the down pipe , black stuff which I assumed to be oil (I found this weird since my oil is new, this is the first startup).

the black stuff (oil?)turned into a hard like plastic feeling substance.

I got this Turbo on here , which was supposedly a good Turbo and didn't need because he upgraded to a bnr.

is my Turbo blown or could it be something from assembly leaking out? its smoking so much I am leaning towards it being blown oil seals on the Turbo, could it be something else or something easy to fix?

nothing appeared to be leaking from any of the oil fittings on the Turbo.

Take the shield off and run it to get a good look. Is this the first time the car is running?
If so, it may be excess oils burning off.

Mine smoked a lot and I found lots of oil underneath. I thought my new BNR was toast! I took it all apart, cleaned it and put it all together. Everything was fine after. I have no idea what it was, perhaps something was stuck in the drain and fell out, but I never noticed.

So before you panic, give it a thorough look over.

Sounds link bad sealing rings, but are you running stock oil pressure? Have you verified that the turbo is spinning at idle?

There are probably other turbo rebuilders in your area, but BNR is a reliable source and gives you the option of upgrades.

haven't verified its spinning, I'm hoping its just an exhaust leak and stuff burning off from first startup. maybe some kind of plastic burnt and got melted on to the downpipe

if its a first startup, that is normal, its just burning off any oil/coolant/etc that came into contact with the housing. it will go away after a drive or so

if not, then its more likely just a loose oil feed or drain line, or you need new gaskets

the turbo could have a bad rear oil seal, but then you should see smoke out the exhaust too, unless somehow your downpipe was loose and oil leaking out the dp gasket and onto the exhaust, causing smoke there

in-out play (thrust bearing check) and side-side play (journal bearings check) have nothing to do with leaking oil

edit: oops just reread your original post, yes looks like bad rear oil seal if that is indeed oil, but i would take it for a drive first and see if smoking stops. maybe it was some sort of epoxy or jbweld that melted under the heat?

the down pipe wasn't torqued on fully because the welds I had done to the flange are in the way for the nut to fully make its way down the stud.

I grinded it down and it still won't fit, it needs more grinding (really I just need a better down pipe with normal welds on the seams)

it

was welded because the flange broke 3/4 of the way off at the seam when I pulled the engine.

Don't freak out until you look it over. This is the first start, excess oil from rebuilding it and being handled is going to burn off.

well it stopped smoking and that black stuff I had going onto my downpipe I want to say is the ultra black rtv I used , it comes out the sides when you press stuff together and I believe it heated up and dripped off something.

I now have to search for a vacuum leak, unless an exhaust leak at the downpipe to engine flange can cause the problem, my car won't idle below 1500 rpm and even at 1500 it sounds like its missing, I messed with the cas to adjust the idle but nothing changed. (I set timing to stock when I stabbed the cas).

I have everything blocked off for emissions.
