I was reving the engion in my driveway and after i got to about 5500 rmp i could smell something berning, smoke was comeing out of the shifter. i turnd the car off. turned it back on and there was no smoke. Sounds like you have an exaust leak and you are missing your shifter insulation.

By the way... please be kind to your RX-7. If you treat it well, it will treat you well. Most of the time anyway...

Was there a smell to it?
It could be just that your lower shift boots are gone or are just smoldering once your tranny gets hot.
*shrugs*
I am sure other people will have a better idea on whats up.

Wow you did not pull the boot off and fully inspect the car immediatly after and befor turning the car back on!

More then likely a bad exhaust leak from headers/mid pipe

Take it to an exhaust shop.

It shouldn't be, just be aware of what they are doing so you dont get screwed and end up with a huge bill.

Yes it will be safe. Roll down your window incase any exaust fumes are coming inside the car.
