Yeah but does it smell so bad that inside the car it starts to bother your eyes. Even with the a/c on? What could I do to stop it..

Here are pictures of the exhaust

Most likely its your trunk seals that are bad. Alot of people don't know this but if they wear out the exhaust smell + not having cats will sneak into that car through the hatch or trunk. It looks like you still have your cats, whether they are doing their job or not is another thing unless you know how old they are it might be time to replace, although it looks like someone welded that one is when working on the exhaust. If your cat isn't working, it will just add to the effect...

Check out mazdatrix: http://mazdatrix.com/in-hatch.htm

Also while you are replacing that, make sure you don't have any exhaust leaks and that the seal for the fuel pump access "door" is sealing as well. The exhaust fumes can find their way through that too. If there are no leaks of fuel anywhere else in the engine bay then this should set you straight....

check for exhaust leaks... inspect the flanges... get the car in the air and start it and put ur hand near the flanges and feel for any blowing air squeezing out..

Would an exhaust leak cause this smell to come in the car?

Yes, it will, the exhaust gases are not directed to the rear of the car, thus they will find their way through your windows and shifter boot, ect....

I don't know... exhaust leaking into the passenger compartment wouldn't have that much of a gasoline smell (based on his description). I've hauled some 10' boards and/or PVC pipe etc. with the hatch held down with a bungee cord lots of times. Yeah, the exhaust fumes are pretty bad, but it's not a flat out gasoline odor (and yes, I had the windows down too ).

that much of a gasoline odor seems like it would come from a gas leak or excessive unburned fuel coming through the exhaust (which I would also think would exhibit a really rough running engine).

Have you tried jumping the fuel pump, let it run for a bit, then check under the car for drips/leaks? I would almost suspect a fuel line leak under the car (closer to the tank).

It seems to be going thru gas really quick as well. I have a friend that works on them all the time and he is going to look at the air flow box and make some adjustments. But I know for sure I have a leak at the header and the smell is really strong out the back. With the windows closed I dont smell so much but then my a/c switch isnt working so I have been sweating like crazy because this florida heat is killer. But I will see and run the car after this to make sure. But the smell is of gas... Exhaust smell in the car is minimal but gas is most defeinitely there because it burns the **** out of my eyes. Either way I will check all that.

Run the fuel pump using the yellow jumper with the key set to ON. Let it run for 10-20minutes (make sure engine is cold, you don't want any fires if it is leaking), then after that start to look for leaks around the pulsation dampener, fuel lines, fuel injectors, ect....

Make sure you do leave the pump running for at least a few minutes since you could also have a slow drip coming from the lines or pulsation dampener. The smell of raw fuel is not exhaust, but an actual leak.

The motor is not leaking. The exhaust has a bored out CAT and the seals on the tailights are not there so the smell of the exhaust is coming in the car thru the rear and there is an exhaust leak in the front as well. I am going to a muffler shop and see what I can do and seal the rear lights.

Well, if it's running rich I assume it's coming from the exhaust.
The reason I asked the question is that some the S4s had a problem when the ambient temps were over @90degrees. The fuel in the tank would heat up and the excessive amount of fumes couldn't be controlled by the cannister. It would vent out the bottom and be picked up and brought into the cabin area. Relieving the pressure in the tank by undoing the cap would help for maybe 20 minutes and then it would return.
