small metal gasket/ spacer

well I installed my C's STS yesterday and in the process of removing the old shifter and bushings, the old piece of metal gasket/ spacer was broken. As you can see in step number 10 they remove this piece and replace it in number 12. what is this piece, what does it do, and is it okay that I don't have it anymore??

thanks

i think you're talking about the lower shifter bushing, you put in place a metal spacer where the bushing used to be, but you should have another one to put on top of the metal spacer before you put in the shifter

i'm only speaking from my experience with the mazdatrix short shifter, which is similar to the C's

wait I'm confused here. In step 10 there is this little metal ring he has in his hand, thats the piece that was broken. Is that piece necessary?

That's the 'wavy' spring / shim that sits under the lower bushing. 100% necessary? - probably not. Shifter might feel a little sloppy without, though.
Get the shim & busing kit from the dealer.

But yes the return spring (the wavy spring) is used for tension, and is recommended, but not required.

BTW: That link is stuffed with a virus: HTML.Redlof.A. If you clicked on it, you infected your computer.

HTML.Redlof.A is a polymorphic, encrypted, Visual Basic Script virus that infects .html, .htm, .asp, .php, .jsp, and .vbs files on all drives. Depending on the location of the Windows System folder, the virus copies itself to either %windir%\System\Kernel.dll or %windir%\System\Kernel32.dll. It changes the default association for .dll files.

Also Known As: VBS/Redlof@M [McAfee], VBS.Redlof [AVP], VBS_REDLOF.A [Trend], VBS/Redlof-A [Sophos]
Type: Virus
Systems Affected: Windows 3.x, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Me

I used a thin O-ring to replace that part.
It took out the play in the bushings and kept the lever from buzzing at certain speeds.

I think we need a mod to close this thread so to protect others from opening the link. I got the wavy seal ordered and my question was answered.
