Slowly overhauling my '88 FC before spring
Slowly overhauling my '88 FC before spring
Hey there,
With spring coming, and plans to paint my car once these Canadian roads are less salty, I am slowly doing an overhaul on my FC to get it running even better.
Its a 1988 FC N/A with 105000 original km's. Its current colour is Arctic Silver, but I might be changing that come spring.
I have replaced, or have parts on order to replace the following:
Oil change
New plugs
New plug wires
New O2 sensor
New air filter
Clutch replaced 6000km ago (when I got the car)
Next step is going to be the shifter, since it has a lot of play, and can be a pain getting into lower gears, and it feels like there are bushings or something worn out, because it can be tough to find 3rd gear. I would like to change it to a short shifter, but Im not sure where to start in terms of parts needed. I will also be replacing tranny fluid when I get to replacing the shifter.
After that, I want to port my enging, but that is far from now...
Any suggestions on shifters, or where to start would be great!
Cheers,
Joe

- fuel filter
- shifter bushings (for now...worry about shifter maybe later?)
- rear diff fluid
- check belts and hoses
Is it a base, sport, GX or GXL (our canadian cars have different trim levels from the U.S. certain years)? If GXL (or something else so it's good to double check as sometimes parts are swapped) you may have an LSD (limited slip diff). If so I think the FSM says to use an LSD additive.

You should wait until I get paint on it. Haha.
Its a little sad right now... my left rear quarter panel got ran into on the military base by one of their busses. so its not the prettiest.

Things have been slow on my 7 lately as I had been planning on buying a new car. With that idea being put on hold for at least a few months, its time to keep working on the old girl!
The dent I mentioned earlier is still there... But I have decided to attempt to learn how to do body work, and I am going to give the repairs a go by myself. Depending on how that goes I really need to drop my suspension a bit, but I dont want to spend a fortune on it, so hopefully I can find some used coilovers.
The next thing I want to look into is the transmission. It makes a sound around 3000 rpm, that sounds as if there is change rattlinig around in the ash tray. Im not sure if its a big issue, could even be the shifter bushings being very worn out.
I will get some pictures on here eventually. Feel silly with the stock ride height at the moment though.
