Sigh, are all power mods a trade off?

It seems to me that nearly every power mod results in slightly increased hp at 5k and up rpms, with decreased power at low rpms. So if you mod the crap outta your car, you get lots a hp at redline, but trying to get going from a stop light will be a royal pain. Also, if you want to be the least bit fast, in a race or whatever, you have to just about take it to redline in every gear. I guess my question is, what can i do to my rex to get a good gain at every rpm?

hey

thats funny. I gained some low end when I put my race pipe on. I have an 89 that dosent need backpressure thou. I have rb dual heads just sitting that people say makes a difference starting at 2k. Also the md chip claims increased low end and exceleration. Take out all your emissions and belts. you should get more low end thier. Crane box gives better response suposively as well as making your car lighter. My hood weighs 50 pds or something. Aluminum hood with flex a lite windows a/c p/s all emisions should save 175-200 pds wich is a noticible diff off the start. Trust me. My car bogs when I put a full tank in. I drive it low now. 18.5 gals is like around 150 pds I think. 6pds per gallon. Get another car for driving if you cant do the emisions thing. Leav your seven for fun weekend racing. If your ports dont work. Take 5 and 6 port sleeves out. I heard its better than wiring them without to much loss of low end.

Supercharger or turbo + minor street port + butterfly value in the exhaust wired to an engine management system for variable backpressure.

Larger fuel injectors.

Those are a few of the streetable drivetrain mods.

Thats weird with the race pipe... i was thinking to when i drove my friends 87 rex with ONLY the exhaust manifold... it was slow as heck till about 4k, then it took off like a rocket. I've heard mixed things about the chip.. i don't want something that could blow my engine - doesnt it advance the timing? An aluminum hood would be nice, just easy to dent I'd like to get the crane ignition system, does it really make a difference? Emmissions stuff is staying in for now, i dont think its that much weight, but ac on the other hand might need to go... how much i just the ac? Can you take the condensor and whatever else there is besides the compressor out with relative ease?

Vaughnc ~ is there an actual butterfly valve setup that i could get? It always occurred to me that changing the backpressure for different rpms with a valve of sorts would be a huge gain, but didnt know there was something out there already... point me in the direction if you have any idea...

hey

Some one told me that ac was like 120 pds. I took mine out and was like 50pds altogether although I didnt count the r12 becasue it was already out. I gues you can leave the compresser in but I think its not worth it. What your trying to do I dont think Its worth it. An n/a will only be fast if you go all the way. You have to not care about emisioins or luxury. The only thing im keeping is my interior. My 7 looks near mint to and is fast as it should be. I did 0-60 the other day in 7 sec flat. I recorded it. So everything is working fine althou I got an engin rebuild 8000 miles ago. Are you thinking about some mild port or something , if not I suggest you buy another 7 for cheap and hop that one up. I think a guy said something about a butterfly valve in his exahust on this forum but wasnt a new thread. Start looking sounds good.

I know, emeissions and luxury have gotta go, i just wanna keep mine somewhat street legal... plus i still want to have 2 seats in the car and all the trim and carpet. I thought about taking out the p/s as well, but didn't like it too much... guess i like being able to steer at high speed with one hand. I'd love to get a *mild port job done, but dont have the money, its my primary car, and it will give you less power at low rpms, more at high rpms -- what im trying to get away from. I'm going to look more into the butterfly valve setup, its intriguing at least... As for buying another seven, i'd love to but cant handle the insurance for 3 cars Plus i still live at home and the miata lives in the garage... any work done ont he car would be outdoors.
