side mount oil cooler(s)?

just wandering if anyone is running a side mount oil cooler or coolers instead of the stock unit? I have relocated the stock one for my Vmount setup, and it blocks a LOT of air that could go straight to the IC, so I've been thinking about mounting the oil cooler on the side... like in the brake duct areas, and having almost twice as much air going to the IC/rad... not that I'm having problems with cooling, but I'm always kind worried about it...

anyway, if you have done side mount oil cooler, what oil cooler did you use? and was just a single one enough, or did you have to mount one on each side?

thanks.

Good idea, but...
Do you think the stock ducting is enough for the oil coolers?

This would almost require an aftermarket front bumper with enlarged side openings.

hmm.... thats a thought....

I was actually planning to get an aftermarket front anyway... but I wouldn't mind cutting up the stock front a little more untill then. it already looks pretty beat up... lol.

I'm not really sure how efficient aftermarket coolers are compared to the stock one though...

would something like this:

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

cool as well as teh stock one? not sure if that particular one would fit on the side... but if it would, I have no idea how it would compare to the stock cooler...

here we go...

I'm guessing there's one on the other side too...

8"X11" is pretty damn huge, it won't fit there without tons of modifications to the bumper, fender and supports. you should be looking into aviation oil coolers, something more compact or possibly 2 FD oil coolers.

That picture is pure sex. I saw a dual OC setup that a company was making for the FD in an RX-Tuner Mag. It was almost $1000 tho. Came with AN lines and everything. If it were me, which I'll be doing a V-mount around the end of summer, I would lay it flat near the bottom of the radiator and drop a duct down below the front lip a little.

huh? what? if I'm understanding what you're saying... that won't work for me... the bottom of my radiator is already almost an inch below the stock front bumper, and comes all the way up to the front... so I def. won't be fitting anything below or infront of it...

hmm.... I wonder if I could fit it like right in front of the sway bar? not sure how air would effect it there... if it would come up from the ground and get to it, or come down from the radiator and hit it... ??? probably the latter(esp. with the fan blowing onto it. lol. ) ... but would that be a big negative effect on the cooling of the oil? hmm.... I might have to check fitment on that... maybe give it a try...

but yeah, I figured 11x8 would be a bit big to fit in the side... but assuming it did get good airflow and could be fitted, would it cool as well as the stock cooler?

Something like this. There was one guy that had a turbo FB and his radiator was ducted kind of like this because of his Front mount.

My ideas are always too hard to explain. I've seen people put one in the side vent except angle in a little more than that jap car. You just have to make sure no air gets past it. You could effectively use that small of an area on our front bumpers(S5) and get air to the whole oil cooler. As long as it was one like he has in that picture.

I took off my FTP lenses and am going to put dual oil coolers there off a Kawasaki motorcycle. I know they won't drastically improve cooling, so I'm keeping the stock unit too. I just want something to do with the ftp lense holes. I'll probably have it done by next month.

why do you think you need tha much more cooling? too much is not necessarily a good thing...

well, I did some measuring. looks like I'll be able to fit a cooler about 11x6(probably like 1.5 inches thick) on the sides if I angle them a bit....

how will that size work for cooling? will I need one I each side, or could I get away with just a single one on one side?

okay, so I've been trying to figure out places I might be able to re-mount the stock oil cooler to get a little more flow to the rad/IC. the only place I can really come up with is behind the rad... but I'm thiking this won't work... but figured I'd ask just to make sure. would air coming out of the radiator be cool enough to cool the oil enough? lol.

FD R1 has side mounts? hmm... that might be a 'little' easier to find that rx8 coolers... cool.

and I was planning on BNsports kit, which has pretty large side openings as well. but GPsports I bet would work too.

yup, the R1 has duals if my memory serves me correctly...plus the lines they ould have would work with minimal effort.

If you do this be sure to post some pics, Im always intrigued by the different cooling setups on 7's, I swear its theonly platform that has this amount of variation in the aftermarket.

When designing ducting, remember the rule is that an opening for a heat exchanger only needs to be 1/3 the area of the exchanger.

Whaaaa???
I'm wondering if it's enough!
My car does run hot (live in El Paso) but I'm going to get a new radiator to help that problem out.
Either way, I need to something about those ugly *** holes where the FTP lenses used to be. Plus, if the oil starts running too cool I'll just use thinner oil

I guess you could just leave it alone .... and see what the oil temps are and the intake temps. Then if it is a problem move em out and use two.
