Show me your n/a intake!

I'd like to see what you other n/a guys have fabricated (or, I suppose, purchased) in the interest of sucking more (hopefully cool/cold) air!

I have two stock airboxes right now, one of which has been cut up, as was a common mod in the late 80/early 90s, though I doubt it was cut to increase airflow as best as possible. I'm looking to make something (probably involving a heat-shielded cold air box and large cone filter) to increase my air intake, and hopefully suck in air at a lower temperature.

So, show me what you have and tell me whether you would reccomend it!

search for CAI or cold air intake.

Do not purchase the Apex-i unit ( I have this one but costs too much imo)

Some don't recommend the HKS foam ones because, apparently, the foam breaks off and is sucked in (i never had a problem with it on my TII and I washed it regularly and FOLLOWED THE INSTRUCTIONS and MADE sure it wasn't damaged by the water stream or air jets of any kind)

a filter is a filter and you could probably be ok with a cheap Ebay filter. (some might not agree but think about it, what is the purpose of the filter?? why pay 100+ for something that can be had for >$20?)

Look at Titostoy's pics for the proper way to make a Cold air box.

SEARCH!!

with regards to Titostoy:
Cool! How do you like it? and is it sucking all its air through the vent in the heatlight, and a bit from the front of the hood? where do I ideally want to suck air from? How much of a performance increase did you notice over stock? and finally, who makes your front strut support bar, how much did it cost, and would you reccomend it?

Phoenix7, thanks for your input; I know your opinion can be trusted.
I've been eying several cheap ebay filters and adaptors, and will probably purchase the biggest ebay cone filter I can find and make an airbox like Titostoy's.

Jager-
reeeeeeally? pics? how much, shipped to 43085? how would I set it up in my car, etc? Will I be able to attach any 3" filter with adaptor?
Any info you could provide would be helpful.

I was looking into making my own, but if it's inexpensive and easy enough to purchase, I may very well be interested.

i like it very much. although it doesnt really suck air through the vent when you're at a standstill but when driving air is forced through it so it gets cool air like that. but it doesnt really work at night when the lights are on. some people here drill a hole through the fender-well and route a pipe in and have the filter under the fender. the air is cooler there but you may have a problem with rain and puddles ( some do and some dont). as for performance it doesnt add alot of horsepower but it does give you a better throttle response. i'm gonna make my own vented light cover because i feel that the one i have now is not so good. as for the strut it's your average ebay strut bar with a mazdaspeed stick on it (bought it from a friend of mines for 10 bucks) if you do autox's then i'd recommend it.

A Real CAI

Here is what we made. A cold air box with an underbody scoop.

Enjoy.

FC3s, that's one place I'd been considering trying to suck air from- right next to the radiator. How's it work out for you? any threat of rain water making its way in?

a little bit of rain water isnt going to make a huge difference. You will likely flash it to steam before it can cause any damage in the engine. Big gulps are a whole other story.

F.C.3S is my cousin and he did that on my car.

So far, no problem at all. The scoop is in front of the tire, if it'd be behind, probably would be another story...

have you measured the difference in performance? that'd be a major factor for me in deciding how to do this. I won't be making any changes to the hood or headlights, either, this looks like a nice alternative and probably works better anyway.

No not really, but Its 100% logical that its better than with no scoop. Probaly the best way to do it too if you dont wanna mod the body.

yeah, I'd prefer not to mess with the wheel well or anything else, too. NON-INVASIVE is what I'm looking for.

I used it with a Bonez intake kit which I beleive has a 2.5" inlet.

It's a VinSpeed setup. He made them off the TeamFC3S forum for like $60 shipped. I bought one and now that Im going turbo with a FMIC, it doesn't really fit. So hence Im selling it.

lol, I was waiting for that. Yes, its 'squirted, so I'm running speed-density which means no AFM.

mine:

hard to tell but the tubing goes down and past the engine bay (had to cut a hole). using an HKS foam filter, had no problems for the past 2+ years, washed it twice.

Im seeing some intake tubing smaller then 3.25" ID. That would only cause restriction for long intakes. Esspecially the last pic.
