Should fuel pump turn on when you push in the AFM? 89 TII

Just wondering if the fuel pump should turn on when you push the plunger in? I jumpered the fuel pump and it runs fine. I am having a problem with starting and then dying.

This is a series 5 2nd gen. It has the cone type AFM vs the flapper type of the 86 to 88 models. By MAF, do you mean the hot wire type? IN the FSM they call it an AFM. I have MAF's on my M5.
