short throws for FCs
ok everyone im new to the sight so i apologize if theres already a thread on this but anyway here goes. I need a short throw shifter for my 88 rxy ragtop that i just bought in the past week. I was told by a rotary enthusiast to get a B&M short throw but they dont even make them for 2nd gens! :P So i started seraching online but havent found much. Im looking to stay under $150 and i would prefer to have one thats made for my car as I've heard of using a Miata short throw but i prefer as close to a perfect match up as possible. I havent had time to go searching on here to find a post on this already so im hoping someone sees this quick and can get me some help. Much appreciated. Thanks.

under $150 is something used... top short shifters have to be c's and mazdatrix. if you can sourch one used they run for about $100... brand new around 200. but yeah you can always use the ebay miata shifter but i've heard over time they're crap but someone will correct me shortly.

I bought the shifter and boot package from mazdatrix and installed it in a half hour . It works great and like it a lot . Makes the car more fun to drive for sure
they warn about rattle occurring in some of them with no real fix available, just random occurance in some not related to the shifter but the car. Mine doesn't rattle , but buzzes a little in third gear mostly if the revs are below 4000, but usually keeping a hand on it and moving it slightly removes that noise . It was not cheap but I'm happy with it. It has a more definate "click" into each gear than the stock one I had which I like but some others don't

Basically, you can have your short throw shifter either cheap or good. The Mazdatrix unit is very good, but not cheap at $200. The Miata units you can get on eBay are pretty cheap, but may not last, plus you will have to grind off a bit of the bottom of the shifter ball to make it work....you pays your money and you takes your choice.
As for rattle, even if you go with the Mazdatrix unit, it may rattle and its not the fault of the shifter, but the car. My first 7 was a 91 N/A and the Mazdatrix unit worked just great right out of the box. My second 7 (and current one) is a 87 N/A and the Mazdatrix unit rattled so bad I was going to put the stock shifter back in.
I authored a thread called Curing Short Throw Shifter Rattle a year or so ago. If you search this title you'll find it. After this my Mazdatrix unit worked just fine and is still working.
As for the flame you received above, some members just get annoyed when the same question gets asked. And yes, if you had searched you would have found it. I can see flaming a longer term member who should have known better, but its unfortunate that a brand new member gets flamed on their second post.

if ya wanna do it the real cheap way and ur a diy kind of guy..get a blow torch and a long pair of tonges..sit there and heat up the bigger stem part(bout 2 in from threads and it will take a while but the whole top will come right off. its like rubber under all that and you can grind aWay all the rubber till its just a metal stem again..you dont have any more threads but some aftermarket shift ***** with the different sizes of plasttic tops and the 3 little srew things that6 screw into the plastic piece to hold the **** in place will grip that..tryed to describe it as best as i can

i have the mazdatrix unit and it works great...but most people either love it or hate it. It definitely takes more effort to shift, but I personally love the notchy feel and it's a LOT shorter throw.

i apologize i was not trying to sound rude to you, merely just saying that if you didnt want to answer the questions then dont. and i have googled and all im coming up with are the mazdatrix and the C's shifter. so i figured i would ask on this sight since im new with mazdas. i wanted to know all my options before i end up having to drop $200 dollars into a mazdatrix short throw. and yes, x-javen-x, im trying to shorten the entire throw not just the shaft

Im happy to help someone who has tried to help him/herself but was unable to get to the right answer. But I dont think personal lazyness is tolerable. Why should he get to be lazy and just have everything spoonfed to him? Do a little research, and then come here and ask a thoughtfull question if you still have one. Most likely you wont, cause its been beaten to death.

ignore the flamming trolls, they just want to get there post count up by acting like idiots..
i have the mazdatrix short throw, I love it, doesn't seem 'harder' to shift as others stated, but my stock bushing were bad so maybe that made my stock shifter harder to throw so its about the same all in all, I get a little noise from it but if you make sure you fill the shift tower with oil you should be ok, i also coated the metal ball on mine with some rubber type gasket maker to help stop the noise, i don't even notice it anymore

Im pretty sure i said that i had searched for awhile on google and other sights and all i could find was the mazdatrix and the C's shifters. Also checked ebay. But i guess that doesnt count as research? And now im being reprimanded for asking the "pros" a question.
I didnt use the stupid search box because you never find exactly what your looking for. So i saved myself some time by asking the question to people who already know the answer. I didnt know that saving time was being lazy. To those of you who actually helped me out by posting something useful, i thank you for your ideas and opinions.
