short-shifters

ok with all this talk about shortshifters and how there is no TRUE shirtshifter im confused....what is a TRUE shortshifter?

besides that i just wanted to ask you guys about your experience with them, i know a few of you have the C's one, and i was also wondering if anyone had the MAZDASPEED one as well...the reason i ask is because im going to buy one VERY soon, and i want to know which one people like the most...

thanks

i have the mazdaspeed one ... and i think investing in a cheaper one is a better idea....280+ usd of a shortshifter is a little outrageous (kicks myself in the ***)

really? its not worth it? i myself would rather spend that much on a well-known company, than these ones that people just started to make on their own...

have you had any experience with other shifters on another car to kinda compare the 2?

My friend has just recently acquired a B&M catalog. I know that they are well know for quality, but mostly with muscle cars. I decided to look in the catalog as Ibecause I want one too. Anyways I found one for 2nd gen rx7's, don't know how much it costs or any exact details, will try and get the catalog again within a couple of days.

I searched and searched and I only found B&M S.S.'s for FD's. None for FC's. Let us know if you find them though.

You could use an FD short shifter except B&M's i dont think that one will work.
There are plenty of them on ebay for under 100 or 150. Higgi is coming out with a line of short shifters for 150 they are of good quality i might add. -Gabe

there is a post in the forum by Higgi about how he had some short shifters machined. i might get one from him after christmas time when he gets s5 threaded ones. mazdatrix also sells a shortshifter complete with all the shifter bushings. if you ask them they could probably knock off the price of the bushings if you don't need them. i drove down there today and the sales guy said he could do that.

I bought a shifter from hIGGI, mainly because im too damn cheap to spend twice the money for the same product, and because that way i can help a fellow seven-owner get some money---which all sevenowners need....

Id Higgis shifter have a longer bottom part (below the pivot) and have the same length top, or is it jsut a shorter handle?
-EDIT- Never mind I just forced my lazy *** to look at his post and answered my question.

That is so true but a shifter is a shifter.
and as long as it will do the job, i dont mind paying 100$ LESS

You can also try a C's SS, a guy on eBay named JapAndy has a used one for sale every once in a while. Although, you are still going to pay a pretty high price for a used shifter they usually go a little cheaper than Mazdaspeed's shifter.

Still i think your best bet is to get a Mazdatrix shifter or one of Higgi's. If you need the replacement bushing like most of the older FC do, it's probably better to get a Mazdatrix because they are all included. Otherwise, you can save some money with Higgi.

On Mazdatrix's website they have a great write-up on short shifters. I guess a true short-shifter is where the pivot ball is moved up so that the throw length changes.

The only ones available for the FC are: C's, Mazdaspeed, Mazdatrix, and Higgi's (I think thats all)

What I did was just drop my aftermarket shift **** way lower on the shifter...Its not a true short shift, but it works well and is kinda free.

deltron, i would consider Mazdatrix's one as it comes with new bushings and a shift boot for a decent price.

I am using the ghetto short shift (Lowered shift ****) and it feels pretty good to me. Is there really a big difference with the true short shift?

well a true short shifter will require a lot less "work" than a shortened stock shifter because the pivot point is moved up on a short shifter. i don't know if you can compare the force required to shift either but i think it also takes less force to move a real short shifter.

I checked out the WET design and it looks pretty cool. At $185 it's cheaper than some (most?) of the others.
So it's not just a matter of a change in overall leverage? (I would tend to think that a 2 1/2" throw would always be ~2X the force of a 5" throw) (5" used as example only. I've never measured the stock throw)
Thanks for the info!

I have the C's in one car, a modified stock (lowered) in another, and hIGGI's is on the way. I will give you a full comparision of them soon.

deltron.. regarding your post just before mine..... its not that it isnt worth it, but if your can get some other product that does the same thing for cheaper?? ... i only knew of the mazdaspeed one.. otherwise i would have gone to mazdatrix for one honestly.

and i havent tested out another type, because all the other fc owners where i live dont have shortshifters ... at least the bunch that i know.... hope that helps..

andd... dont shortshift kits come with replacement bushings that will allow that short shifter to fit??? at least mine did.... so if you are going to a shortshift kit i dont think you'll need to buy replacement ones
