short shifter ?
i recently purchased and installed and ebay short shifter in my rex just this weekend. this is NOT a miata nor the MKI shifter. it is the other one that is usually sold for about $70. install was a breeze, it fits well and shifts fine.
my question is... there is the nylon/platic peice around the ball (bottom) of the shifter. exactly how important is that peice, and does it HAVE be there.
i couldnt set the shifter in the housing properly unless i took the nylon peice off. it shifts fine, no rattles or anything, and it's not sloppy. i'm sure its there for a reason and i need to know if i'm damaging my tranny. i still have and want to make sure this is ok.

the shifter bushings are round plastic peice that goes on the bottom of the shifter, with a notch in it, they arnt 100% required, but the shifter will feel very sloppy if you dont have hte bushings( very common thing to wear out on 2nd gen are those bushigns they like to disinigrate over time!)
tekwiz99- i had a feeling thats what is was there for.
NeCr0mStR- yeah, it definitely made a difference over 50% reduction. it was so easy to install. it took me 15min
if you keep that extension (the shifter is a two peice) it will sit kinda high. a little higher that the stock shifter. if you take it off, it will sit nice and low, but you have to buy an aftermarket ****. luckily i had one lying around. definitely worth the money and its over $120 less than the MK1.
