When I purchased my vert the shifter was already short, but I think all they did was cut a few inches off of the stock bar... It takes alot to push it into gear (forget about speed shifting)... I REALLY sucked at first, but I've gotten used to it... I can't help but wonder what a real short shifter would be like though... I've been thinking about getting one, but I need to finish paying off the car before I start doing any mods...

You will be amazed if you change to synthetic gear oil in your tranny.

i have a mr. shortshift, i got it off ebay for half of what a mazdaspeed would have been. i figured how different could it be. as far as performance the thing is awesome i cant believe how quick and easy it is. you just snick it into the next gear. but ive noticed that it vibrates weird and makes a little bit of noise thats kinda annoying. does any one else have this problem? did they short me a bushing? idk

I'm just using a "custom billet" (I think it was made in HS metal shop from a VW lug nut and some aluminum bar stock) **** that threads to within 1/4" of the top. Now that I have bushings (They were missing. I thought it was kinda loose!) it's pretty close. Can't wait to try the mazdatrix short-throw!

"Beat the **** out of it! It'll be fine. I've got a rack full of spare parts..."

I can't really cast a vote, because I don't know about any of them except the Mazdatrix one. I put one in my 91 NA and its worked great. Absolutely no complaints. I would recommend it.

*Warning* I'm about to ask a sorta off-topic question:

Where can I get shifter bushings for my FC? Does NAPA have them?

You could go there and ask, or call and ask, but I would really doubt it. Just get some from Mazdatrix or one of the other places that are rx-7-specific parts dealers. They aren't super expensive or anything and are very easy to install. Plus once you do it, you'll kick yourself for not doing it earlier.

Hrm... a friend of mine has a mazdatrix short shifter on his '91 N/A - I practiced driving stick in his car before I got my '87 TII and I got used to it. Now that I've got my own car and have gotten used to the stock shifter, my friend's short shifter feels too hard to use. It requires too much force to get it into gear. I think I shift faster using an easy shifter with longer throw than my friend's short throw.

Then again, its probably all about getting used to it. He's gotten used to it (apparently since its still on his car) and he says he loves it.

I replaced the **** to a MOMO Airleather, and it's still like driving a truck, how much is higgi's kit? My Impreza's shift throw is like 300% better than my 7's..

The real magic is in fresh, synthetic gear oil. My tranny is very worn and I'm just waiting for it to go critical before I put in the spare. I put some Redline synthetic in it a while ago and not only did a lot of the noise go away, the shifts got a lot easier and faster. FC-Chan says it's easier than her TII trans.

when my baby gets back together she's gonna get some of that redline goodness for her trans. I can't wait to see what diffrence it makes.

I don't think that B&M makes a short throw shifter for the 2nd gen, only for the third.
I have a Mazdatrix one...rattled really bad at first but has gotten better. Still rattles though.
My tranny gets through the gears like a warm knife through butter. Good oil like Red Line or some other synthetic definately helps. Also a fresh rebuild...
