Short Shifter?

I just bought an 87 T2 and the shifter still works but it feels like its about to fall off or something ive never felt one so lose so instead or getting a new stock one i figured that i would look into a short shifter i really have no clue about them. any information would be a big help. i dont have too much money to spend on this so money is an issue as far as i know and concerned cheaper is better

Do you mean the entire shifter is totally loose or that the actual shaft is loose as in it feels like it is 2 pieces? If the shifter as a whole is really loose, then just replace the bushings either from the dealer or from Mazdatrix. Cheap fix and it really makes the shifter nice.

The other option is to take off the top section of the shifter. The shifter is assembled in 2 pieces. A base piece and a top section that is vulcanized to the lower with rubber for vibration reduction. This does not change the throw of the shifter, but shortens the height of the shifter alone. This is ok if your tranmission is good, and the synchros are not giving you any trouble. But if you have notchy shifting now, it is multiplied by 3 when you shorten the stock shifter. I went back to a stock one in my 86 TII because it was so hard to shift.

The short shifter is worth every penny. My buddy Joe ROmeo has it in his 10th AE, and that thing is awesome! It also comes with new bushings when bought from Mazdatrix.

yeah i would take it apart. you may find out what you see. mine was reeeaally loose and i took it apart and whoever worked on it previous neglected to use two bushings and it had only one. need less to say i put new mazdatrix ones in and it is tight and very precise. i love it. hard to sell a car with sloppy shifter. makes the tranny feel like **** and broken.
