shifter...rattling...wont stop!!!

This has been annoyng the hell outta' me for quite awhile: my shifter won't stop vibrating when it's in gear. I've had a new clutch put in twice and replaced bushings on several occasions. I've also had 2 ***** and have even driven without them on.....still rattles. Do ya think I need to replace the shifter itself or maybe just get a radio to cover up that damn noise

is it a stock shifter or a short throw one?? the short throw ones always rattle and there is no way to fix it.

It could be the retaining spring - look in the Haynes Manual for something that looks like a large kind of crazy paper clip that is supposed to hold the shifter in the centre position - if you are low in oil and/or this thingamumy is broken it can make a hell of a noise - you could also have damaged shifter forks - if bent and touching the housing lots of vibration and noise.
