shifter gets hot...
I have noticed that after driving for about 45 minutes the shifter(all the way up to the shift ****) in my car gets hot....
what can be causing this to get so hot....the car doesnt overheat or even get hot at all....also i have noticed that after driving it i get a kinda greasy film on my windshield on the the inside of the car above the front vents below the windshield after the car sits a while.......

I get that film on all of my windows after just a couple days of sitting.
Its nearly impossible to get it off too, tried Windex and Simple Green....both barely cut it to get rid of it, just kinda smears =\

The heat from the exhaust pipe is coming up through that channel. You'll need to fix the boots and put some more of that brownish carpetfoam type stuff in there. I'm sure it has a name but I have no idea.
Do you smoke? That could be tar from the cigs on the windsheild.

And no, I don't smoke, nor does my car :p I used some old *** RainX glass cleaner cream tonight, and that removed any trace of the grime, we'll see how long it stays away now =\
Most of the shifter boots are actually 3 rubber pieces, and still another smaller rubber boot on the tranny itself. Those of you with short shifter kits probably have all-metal shifters, whereas the stock unit has a rubber "damper" between the upper and lower halves of the shifter. The rubber damped ones will feel cooler. I use a stock short-throw shifter from a Miata that has the rubber damper. No heat problems, especially with my new boots. I used to have the gear oil smell, now I don't. Also if you have a stock catalytic converter, it sits right under the tranny and fries the boots.
Use Sprayway glass cleaner. This stuff cleans really good. I also get that film on the windows in a few days. You can find it at Costco or any auto paint stores. good stuff

Same here. All my boots are new and I have all me heat shields installed and i have all the factory insulation and it stillgets too hot to touch sometimes. and you can smell gear oil. I've noticed this on a few high mileage FC's and weve deduced that it's uber old tranny fluid getting hot and somking from spirited driving. Cnahge your tranny oil and make sure it's properly topped off.
Most cars do this to one degree or another (some, like the new Beetle, have hard plastic in that area and usually stay clean) and hot water with some vinegar in it will take it right off.
Where do you guys think this "vaporizing oil" is coming from?

I just finished putting 3300 miles on my FC in ten days- including two straight shots of 1000 miles apiece in 100 degree weather (Denver>Chicago and back) and the shifter never got noticeably hot at all. That's with a "Miata" eBay short shifter, all boots intact and the factory horsehair in place. Trans/shifter assy. oil is Redline synthetic.
Hows ur heat shields on the car for the exhaust? Do you have an exhaust leak around the tranny, how old is ur cat? That could be heating up hotter due to needing a replacement. When was the last time u changed ur tranny fluid?

Also, Windex leaves a film after you use it. And Simple Green.....holy crap. It leaves a much thicker nasty film that attracts dirt. It's a pretty good de-greaser, but then you have to wash it off with something else. I use Clear Glass aerosol for windows, and a clean t-shirt.
i had the same problem when I first got my seven.. I bought all the boots from mazdatrix... it was a little pricey but it fixed everything... I believe there was a little boot for the shifter that you have to remove or break to install the new bushings and the inner and outer rubber boots.
