shifter bushings (yes I searched)
Maybe I didn't search right but... when I got my bushing kit from Mazdatrix, I noticed it had a white plastic piece, a metal piece with prongs that fit the white piece, two metal circles, and a gasket.
I couldn't find a write up on this anywhere, so I decided to wing and see how it went. When I got the shifter up and out, I found where the gasket went, and then I come to this dark blue almost purple thing, that seemed to match the white thing, so I popped it out and put the white thing in. Put everything back together as properly as I could see and here are my results.
The black piece that bolts in to hold the shifter needs replaced (or the boot-ish thing on top of it), and other than that, my car shifts tighter and cleaner.
While searching afterwards, I found that the blue thing and the white thing are not quite equal. I would like a good explanation, and preferrably a write up. If I missed something while searching, please, clue me in.

ok nm on most of that, i just found it... my main question is, what about that little tiny boot on the three bolt thing? Lack of it is causing my shifter to lock out of gear, I think....

lock out of gear? meaning your transmission physically disenguages itself? Without the little black rubber boot it will just feel strange when you shift. it will not be a firm shifter lever. Or so it seems

Alright, maybe I don't need to replace it then... my shifter just feels really weird... weirder than it did. I also can't get my **** off... how exactly does it come off?
EDIT: As for the locking shifter.. Like beside 1st, 2nd, and 5th, there will be an extra gate so to speak that the shifter will kick into and it's a pain to get back. It stays in gear but thats it.

Perhaps you're speaking of the "inner boot". Did you follow Mazdatrix's "How-to located here? >http://mazdatrix.com/faq/shiftbsh.htm

Final update: I figured out what the hell was going on down there, and now my shifts are tight and precise. Yay. I just need a li'l lube and we're good to go.
