shifter bouncing around, even after replacing the mounts..wtf?
I did the clutch in my 87 TII a few months ago and after everything went back in, it worked, but I got all this new rattling and **** from the drivetrain.
I thought it was my diff mount, but that didn't make any sense to me since that had been fine before I did the clutch and it hadn't been budged or anything during the job. Also, what visual inspection I could do of it didn't reveal anything disturbing.
Then I saw that my shifter was all bouncing around and **** when I'd hit bumps. So I figured it was my tranny mounts. The two y-blocks looked OK but I had replacements lying around anyway so I took the crossmember off and noticed that the rubber crossmember mount was indeed toast. So I replaced the y-blocks and the crossmember. Figured that had to be it but....
Nooooo. Of course not. The shifter is still bouncing all ******* over the place when I hit bumps and I'm worried that the crossmember I just bought is going to get ******* broken because of it.
What else could make the shifter bounce around like that? I'm thinking it could be my motor mounts, especially since in retrospect I didn't support my engine while the transmission was out. (Oops.) But at the same time, if it was my motor mounts, wouldn't I notice something more than the shifter bouncing? I can still accelerate strongly without hearing any rattling or anything like I would expect from dead motor mounts....

I'm talking about the whole rear of the transmission bouncing around, not just the shifter. I just specified the shifter because you can see it inside the car. It is most definitely not the shifter bushings, which are also new by the way. (Even if they were totally gone they could never cause this problem.)
Does anyone have any ideas? Could it be my motor mounts?? I will check them today anyway... ******* cars..
