Shifter acting funny

Okay well here's the deal. My shifter swivels left and right. Kinda like twistinga little to the left and to the right. I took apart the shifter and from searching the threads on here I think I need a new bushing set. But before I go spending some money on the kit I was wondering if anyone can say that this is my problem or do I need to look at something else.

P.S. There were no bushings at all on the lower ball and on the big ball of the shifter.

The lower ball drops into the control rod end in the tranny but if you have no shifter bushings at all then its safe to say you need to add them. Your looking at 20 bucks plus shipping.

Check this thread out and it will give you an idea of what belongs there.

you may also want to read the thread..miata short throw write up ..too..If you want a cheap short throw..I can say that it works..I did it..(I was in the same boat as you ..sloppy shifter..so I went shortthrow..)..It's up to you though..you have some choices..thought you could use a little info on alternatives from stock..(cheap too..!!)

i read that one too but kinda don't have enough down time available to wait for shipping of part. It's a lot quicker for me to fix stock one then upgrade shifter later.

ok so i got a shifter bushing kit and still the same thing. Can anyone tell me if the slot on the large shifter ball has anything attached? My bushings looked good (upper and lower). I am just still getting the wiggle on my shifter and think i might have to buy another shifter.

the slot on the shifter should go to a guide on the surround ..on the upper part of the transmission..Give me a couple minutes ..I have mine apart..when I go back out for a smoke I'll take a quick peek for ya..

i'm back..

ok..here's the scoop...on the inside of the transmission..when you lift the whole shifter assembly off the top ..you should see A PIN that protrudes out the inside of the hole..about the size of a piece of roll pin..If it is missing you may have a problem..the pin is supposed to be at the front(towards the radio)

I have the pin but it seems like the pin is too small for the slot on the large ball of the shifter, hence i can twist my shifter a little to the left and right. On the slot of the shifter I can see a peice of yellow plastic that looks broken. I think this peice keeps the shifter from twisting. I just need some confirmation, otherwise I'm S.O.L.
