"Shift UP" Light on dash

my S4 has a shift up light
You guys with inop "shift up" lights may want to check out your 5th switches on your tranny...Since there's NO continuity when in 5th, if the wiring is messed up, the ECU will think the car's in 5th all the time (and never flash that light)...
Don't know if that would actually hurt anything, though (emissions, gas mileage, etc...)

Lol, but how about the trip odometer? That's what most of us use for gas mileage estimates...For instance, my last fillup netted 28.25 mpg (rebuild's getting stronger, woo hoo

I used to get 29mpg in my '87 sport (pre-turbo), with the turbo, I get about 10. My GTUs is pretty picky, depending upon what state I fill it in, it gets anywhere from 24-31. Anywho, I always laugh that most people are annoyed by the shift lights, but then you see ricers with their 4" 1000watt halogen shift lights(which are larger than the tach, in most cases), which are almost always set to come on way too damn early. Oh well I guess.

I have found the ideal fuel economy for my 'vert shifting right before 3800RPM, keeping vac over no less then 10hg. (Lots of hills around here)
I get 20 city and 26 highway.
I have found that after 3800RPM, the car exits closed loop mode, causing decreased fuel economy. Also, if your vac drops down to about 7 or below, the computer gets that reading from the pressure sensor and exits closed loop mode.
Bogging the car up a hill is not going to net better fuel economy, as the car will be out of closed loop and running much, much richer.
PS: For the 20 city, I should post a note on that.
I drive the car really really hard a lot of the time. I take it a little past redline four to six times a day, sometimes racing, but then I go back to driving the way described in my previous post, and it balences out to 20. Before, when I shifted really early (before I got the vac/AF gauge) I was getting 18-19MPG city.

Lots of highway miles during an "average" trip makes all the difference in the economy. If all you're doing is basically stop & go driving most of the time, it's gonna be low. Acceleration eats the gas, no matter how "conservative" you're trying to be. Simple physics...Takes more fuel to accelerate the mass, than to keep it at a constant speed...
90% of my 100 mile round trip driving 5 days a week is at 70-75-80 mph, closed loop. That's why I'm getting the mileage I am...You can't instigate a closed loop function while accelerating, no matter how "slow" you're trying to do it. I too could probably hit 30 mpg, but I like to romp too much when I do have to accelerate (gotta get on the freeway fast enough so the trucks don't run me over, right?

Believe it or not, the faster average cruise speeds you go down the highway, the better mileage you get. I've proven this to myself numerous times, and have heard a lot of guys say the same thing. It seems paradoxal until you realize that the whole engine is just a big hunk of rotating mass, akin to a flywheel...If I could keep from getting tickets, I'd see if cruising at 90 is even better than 80, but, alas, Johnie Law is always there, lol...
16.6 gal tank for the S4's, I think, don't know about the S5's...

I've learned to ignore it
Only girls belong in the passenger seat, the only place they can see it
Guys that drive my car get annoyed and drive once
Its all good
Girls say, "aww, how cute!"
Guys say, "damn, I hate that light, I hate your car" and give me back my keys so I can smoke their asses
Hey, so if my shift light doesn't come on when I'm in 5th, that would mean my 5th gear switch is working.... right?
I'm assuming it reads off the TPS as well, so if it's not spazing out.... Hmmm..
