PS: I was driving a friend's S4 TII.

It kept saying "Shift UP" on the highway when I was in 5th.
I take it Mazda did not put much effort into the creation of said shift light.

When youre driving around at a constant speed, it will tell you to shift at 2500 RPM, but when you're accelerating, it won't turn on unitl past 3k RPM.

I use it when I need to save gas.

Mazda used it to signal the driver to shift to get the best gas mileage.
This was used to verify to CAFE that the car did hit the target gas mileage as released by Mazda.

SHIFT UP light triggered in 5th gear?
Your 5th gear / reverse switch is disconnected or dead.

You don't,

And for the others in this thread.. it was common on other sports cars of the time to have the shift up light... cars like the 944 and 944 Turbo or VW GTI VR6...

Mine didn't work until I swapped out my clutch, then all of a sudden I was like "what the hell is that?" I now wish I had yanked the bulb when I had the dash apart to put my new gauge faces in.

Or you can just switch to a S5 gauge cluster and not have to worry about it, like me

Thanks alot. If I were to shift when the light comes on I'd be lugging the engine, big time. Where's my electrical tape??? There, fixed.

My old 1984 Honda CRX had the light too. I usually got 40+ mpg in that car.

Does it have the highbeam icon right in the center? - All automatics had a cluster without the "shift up" light. Instead, they had the highbeam icon right in the center.
Your car may have it swapped out.
