Shift rod end links..

is it possable for the shifter rod to jump out of the end link? I was having a problem not being able to get into 5th when I removed the rear housing i found that the shift rod end link for 5th/reverse not in line with the rest of the end links, it was back (towards the rear of the car) by one notch. I hope this makes sense what i'm getting at is how did that happen?
