Shift Points?

I was racing a prelude that was at the back of my car for most of the race, then at the top of 3rd gear, I kept it in gear too long, but never reached redline, and he just like started passing me. I think I should have shifted to 4th earlier, but I always thought everyone took their car to the buzzer and used that to shift, but it seems like the top of my power was about 500rpms before the redline, then it just dropped out. So what rpms do you guys shift at in what gears?

In my limited experience, stress limited heh, I take 1st to around 5k, redline 2nd, 3rd to about 6-7k and by that time any ricer that I chose to race is so far back its not fair....btw I have an N/A GXL stone stock...

I would shift at redline if your car is basically stock. If you have full intake and exhaust, then take it alittle higher. Don't go to 8K if you have an S4(86-88).

it was probably a VTEC prelude, and that's what did it, I usually shift at the redline too, but I might try what these guys are saying.

On my stock dyno chart power started sropping off at 7k RPMS, so that's where I'd shift at. Keep in mind this is for an S5.

hUumm.. i think its the car, like how the engine is, and how its been treated.. cause when i ran an 99si with a whole list of modd.. i got him til third gear but he creeped up in third gear, well, it was a close one. he only had me by his fender.. (plus i was still very new to mt, also my lug nuts was not on very tight for some reasons) but a rematch will be taken place soon.. eheh.. but i went til the buzzer came on.. i think its somtimes better to shift before the buzzer... (oh yea mine is a s5 n/a stock)

The shift point is based on the rpm at which the power to the wheels will maintain its least amount of change from one gear to the next. Some people use the dyno torque numbers, while others use the dyno hp numbers, but it is basically the same process either way.

These calculators will help those who are not really into math.

just cause he started pullin on u, doesn't mean u need to shift sooner, it's all about the gearing, his gears are different from ur's, so he can accel. faster than u at the higher gears if u have close to the same horsepower....Take it to redline, redline is the point of peak horsepower......

He pulled HARD on me though. It felt like I was losing power around redline, not topping out.

2-3:8250rpm

You're not going to beat a VTEC Prelude.

As far as specs go, they get about 15 sec. 1/4 mile times. I've heard of stock TII drivers getting 14.5's.

I heard 14.5 with a really good driver. Either way, once I get back from my trip, I get to finish paying back people I owe, and its back to spending. So far I have a pretty much stock TII with only an A'pexi intake, and the gauges and FCD I ordered to keep it safe. I recently purchased FD wheels with Toyo Proxies on them, and i'll be buying some hubcentric spacers for them to fit right. I have like NO tread on these tires, and I like the look of the FD ones better anyways, so I figured why not just shell out $400 to get the looks and wider tires. I already have a Walbro waiting for future mods, but around the time of the ported wastegate, i'm getting the SAFC, and then it goes to saving for the Racing Beat Turboback. I'll probably just hold off on having the walbro, safc, and rb turboback installed until they are all purchased and at my house, then once thats taken care of, dyno tuning, then track time. Once i'm finished with all of that, bad shifting or not i'll kick his ***, lol.

actually v tecs are overrated. my N/A beat my neighbors 99 and my friend has a friend who has a 97, beat him too. even on the interstate i raced a rice prelude, it was the newer ones....from third i got him until i redline at about 120 in 4th, then i realized he wasnt worth the gas. our cars with straight pipe and intake have about the same power as them, plus were WAY lighter, and have a higher redline so why couldnt i compare, I KNOW!! Redline that badboy all day, it's a rotary you wont hurt it.
