Shift Linkage

Me n a buddy of mine just purchased a 87 rx-7. The shift linkage has alotta play, like alot of movement going on. Is it the bushings thats causing it to be like this? If anyone has had this go on, please let us know. First gear is like...at a 11 o' clock position on this thing. If anyone has any pictures and directions or something on what to do, let us know. We think its the bushings.

Its likely the shifter bushings are worn-- get new ones but if the tranny dosent grind or make noise then its good.

Um...two maybe 3 different issues there my friend. If the tranny doesn't grind or make noise then your shifter bushings are good? I don't think so. Perhaps you are thinking about syncro's which are entirely different.

The answer to the OP's question is shifter bushings (it's been covered here a billion times, searching is handy). They are cheap and you can get them from Mazdatrix.

If shifter bushings are worn then it becomes difficult to engange the gears entirely, which can cause grinding. This is why he said as long as it dosen't grind, not because he dosen't know what a syncro is.
