Shift Box Lubrication

I just bought a used manual transmission for my '86 GXL N/A. The shift box was packed FULL of what looks (and smells) like bearing grease. Looking at the Mazdatrix web site, they say to fill the shift box with transmission fluid.

Is the grease a big problem? Should I flush it out and fill the box with fluid?

Thanks in advance.

sure its grease? Maybe its cooked gear lube?

The grease would make it stiff to shift, but I wouldn't see any other problems.

But cooked gear lube... thats another matter and should be replaced.

PO may have packed it with grease to quiet down a noisy tranny. I've heard of even using oatmeal. I'd see if your supplier has another one.

Do carefully follow their instructions. That way, if there is a problem, they can help you.

When you say transmission fluid I hope you don't mean ATF. Do NOT replace the gear-lube in your manual transmission with ATF. Use a good synthetic from Red Line or the like. Use whatever weight is specified in the owner's manual.

Thanks Cory--The manual says 90 weight transmission fluid in the shift box. I will use Red Line.
