She wont heat up!

I thought it was a stuck open thermostat because she starts bowing hot air fairly soon, but temp gauge only rises to 1/4. On a very hot (for here any way) day she warmed up to cruising temp, so I know the gauge works. After changing the T-stat she still wont heat up, even after 1/2 hour of moderate driving. I'm concerned that the fan may be turning always, which would affect temps at idle, but shouldn't do anything to freeway speed driving. I'm at a loss. The cool temps are making her run rich at idle, so she fails emissions (CO is too high). I really don't want to take her to an ecology certified shop so I can spend the $150 required to get an exemption because none of them have much experience with rotaries. Maybe it doesn't matter though. What do you guys think. I really can't play much 'cause she's technically not legal right now, so I can't risk getting pulled over. If you have any ideas, I'd appreciate it.

That's where it's supposed to sit...

Thats what I was thinking when I read that. Mines usally at 1/4 ... when its 100 deg. and my AC is on and im driving semi-hard it goes to 1/3.

I just looked up the procedure on the variable resistor. It says connect a jumber wire to the terminals of the initial set coupler. What is the initial set coupler? I'm looking at the diagram, and just don't know for sure what it's refering to. Thanks guys.

Get an aftermarket gauge to make SURE you're really running cool. And make sure you use ONLY a Mazda thermostat.

It's a mazada thermostat, and since these guys say their cars run at 1/4, I'll believe my temps are okay. That means back to tinkering.
