Be a better name for my own personal hybrid strain, since I favor heavy indica anyway.

We're almost set for the next big thrash this Saturday.
I think we have all necessary parts, but you know how that goes and I'm sure we'll run into something.
The "big" job will be swapping in the high pressure fuel pump and running the new high pressure hose from the tank to the engine bay. The original Z hardlines were all garbage, so we have a one piece hose running all the way forward and fishing that through might be tricky...maybe not.
Installing the throttle body and hooking up the sensors should be easy.

I have no idea how involved the initial learning/tuning process is...that'll be interesting.

Sigfrid got an early start because we needed to get the fuel lines/fittings figured out...

I have the FC fuel pump here at home, so that'll have to wait till Sat. but any jump we can get is good news.
Apparently, our Durango carb tophat doesn't sit very well on this new body, so that's "unexpected problem" number 1.

There will certainly be more.

Sigfrid and I cosplayed "old geezers" today.
After months of first world whinging..."It's too cold...it's too dark...it's too windy", today was sunny, 90° and calm.

We were miserable.
Too damn hot, so sunny that anything in shadow was hidden in pure black (bear in mind, the entire car is already satin/flat black everywhere) and of course, the curse of the unexpected complication.

Ever the optimist, Sigfrid began the day expecting we'd finish by his predetermined 4 o'clock stopping time.
We actually stopped about 5:30 and the project is about 60-70% finished.

The fuel system took much longer than expected but that was primarily because we were getting fried by the sun and it was more difficult to run the new fuel hose than I predicted.
Turns out, my original routing was so effective at protecting the hose from abrasion that it was fiendishly difficult to remove.
I was generous with the p-clamps, some of which were sorta tough to even see with all the rear end in place.
In my defense, it was no more frustrating than replacing the stock hardlines would have been and it's not a job one does often, so...

The fuel system is complete all the way to the throttle body.
Where it turns out we have no suitable fittings.
That was sorta pathetic.

The wiring was more extensive and intrusive than I expected also.
It's not awful and seems of reasonable quality but some of the requirements are specific enough to require some substantial redoing of the existing harness to maintain the clean appearance we've worked so hard to achieve.

Naturally, because "Mission Creep" is our motto, the electrical work spilled over to a few areas we didn't strictly need to mess with but what the hell, might as well attempt to do it right the first time.
The most extensive job remaining is to connect the car ECU to the fuel pump. The software runs a PWM controlled voltage and it's too integrated to ignore. The benefits far outweigh the hassle of the interior disassembly required but it will take some time.

Unfortunately, I leave town Monday till the 25th, so Sigfrid will have to carry on solo.
We have high hopes, contrary to years of bitter disappointment.

I'm back bitches...miss me?

My working vacation was a success and a welcome respite from my usual daily routine.
Ostensibly I was brought in to help my brother install new paneling in the automatic bays of his two car washes (four bays in total) but my secret agenda was to see some family and eat well...which I did.
We only completed two bays in our five days of work- there was a process learning curve and being both old farts, we were petering out quicker than a more motivated crew.
The bays do look good though...

During this time I intentionally avoided the internet...kind of a mental detox.
I did get a few messages from Sigfrid, who had struggled through the remaining issues with the new FI intake and was very pleased with the progress. The system was now in "learning mode" and results were very positive.

Then suddenly, it all went to hell.
Thursday morning she was hard to start and smoked excessively, Sigfrid was mightily pissed and somehow concluded that the engine itself was at fault rather than the more obvious (to me, at least) option of the FI being the cause. He wanted to swap engines again (this would be the third time!) and there was no talking him out of it.

So yesterday, we did.
It says a lot about his energy level and our level of expertise that we did this swap in 7 hours, start to finish.
If nothing else, we've mastered this aspect of ownership...the unnecessary engine replacement is a move few people practice.

Car fired right up, idled nicely and then proceeded to smoke heavily and run ragged again.
Not to be the "told you so" guy (but I totally did...), the issue turned out to be a rogue setting of the idle control valve, which should read between 4-8 steps at hot idle while ours read 182. No idea why it would revert to this extreme setting but forcing a reboot to default and manually adjusting the screw got us within spec and running nicely again.

It also turned out we were only getting 3/4 throttle opening and the pedal was absurdly heavy...both issues fixed with a revamp of the linkage assembly and now perfect.

Did I mention that we didn't just swap the engines, the "new" one also got a full new timing set, resealed oil pan and new oil pump...just to increase the level of difficulty, apparently.
Seven hours, not too shabby (not too useful either, since none of that was the root cause of the problem but credit due for effort).

Anyway, now we'll see what happens.
Again.

I know he is your best friend and all, but next time the Sigfrid freaks out and wants to do another engine swap, may I suggest that you just up and bitch slap him back to reality.

that happens to us at the racetrack instead of diagnosing stuff, our sigfrid (zis is kaos! vee don't do zat here) has us changing semi-random subsystems, it never works, or well not in any kind of timely manner.

best example is when the new diff made some noises, so they took it apart and looked at it and put it back, in 90 minutes in 100 degree heat. they finished in time to go to grid and get the car out there, but the driver/diff rebuilder didn't have a very good drive...

and it turns out that OS Giekens make noise when its really hot (you would too i imagine)

Obviously the thought has occurred but I'm not sure which reality I prefer.

Often, I think, movement is substituted for progress.
If there is a silver lining to be glimpsed, the (supposed) optimal parts combination is once again in the car and there are no leaks.
Yet.

The clutch slave has begun to fail and I ordered a new one last night.
My options at Rock Auto ranged from $4 to $12...parts for this engine are really cheap.

Wuth any luck, the EFI will complete its 200 mile learning cycle, Sigfrid will actually read the directions and make informed, intelligent adjustments to the settings and we can carry on with some more summer appropriate projects...like making nice doorpanels and maybe redoing the wiring.

Pleased to report that the Z is running fine, no driveability issues and no leaks.
The computer does appear to be learning and the minor glitches can be adjusted out (like how long to return to idle).
Ever optimistic, Sigfrid says she's got more power...I'm just happy it runs.

Underhood heat will be an issue, one we'll need to address quickly.
We need to insulate the exhaust and intake manifolds (which are stacked on to top of each other) and create a new intake tract to the throttle body. The Dakota tophat we'd been using doesn't fit this new "carb" and we're currently using a pancake type filter but all we're sucking in is preheated air.
Now is the time to create the custom setup we've been talking about and that sounds like fun compared to this endless engine fiddling and obsessing. We could/should finish off the front ducting/grill area as well.
The efan is working as designed and temps are stable.

The new slave cylinder arrives tomorrow, hopefully that restores the shifting back to normal.

Otherwise, all is copacetic.
Wonder how long that will last?

Meh, I fart in the general direction of your knocking wood.

The slave did not fix the shifting.
If anything, it got worse...worse to the point that Sigfrid wanted to pull the five speed and put the four speed back in. This seemed like nonsense to me and had the whiff of desperation like last weeks motor swap debacle.
We discussed the situation over beers and bowls as I tried to sidetrack S.'s determination to once again rip some major mechanical component out of the car.
And I prevailed.

I prevailed by fixing the damn problem, going all the way to the opposite end of the system and playing with the pedal>MC adjustment.
The five speed now shifts like butter.

That disaster averted, we moved on to the timing. Sigfrid felt it was not revving high enough and lacked top end. We started adding advance till she'd hit the (reputedly) desirable 42° at 3500 rpm. This raised the advance at idle from 14 to 18 degrees but she doesn't seem to care about that and now revs quickly up to @6000rpm and feels pretty sprightly.
We'll see how that goes and how the fuel computer deals with it.

We then retired on our laurels and brainstormed the new intake we need to fab and options for the front ducting and grill.
I'll be housesitting over there again the end of this month and want to work on those two projects while I'm there.
S. has two business trips between now and the vacation, so I'm not sure how much we'll get done in the next few weeks but at least the Z is running and driving well and has no immediate needs.
Lots of stuff left to do naturally, but nothing that's keeping her off the street.

And the weather was very nice.

How the rest of your day going, clokker?

Like hammered crap, if you must know.

I had one job today, install the new cat from Rock Auto so I can take my required emission test. How hard could that be?
Silly question, that.

I'd meant to gather new hardware for this job but of course, blew it off and suffered for it today. That was irritating but the real kicker is that the flange for the air tube is clocked 90° off. I am mulling options as I simultaneously try to wrap my head around the loss of reverse and (presumably) fifth gears...more or less, completely out of the blue.
Worked fine yesterday (I distinctly recall two back up maneuvers in parking lots) but today, nada.
First through fourth are completely normal and the clutch feels like it always has but the trans won't even pretend to find the two missing gears.
My current theory is that they've been raptured from my transmission and I'm being punished for spending too much time on the Z but the mix of mechanical and theological is a hard sell.

It's probably something more mundane but the easy fixes are not helping.
I've already pulled the shift lever- the bushes, centering spring and pivot socket are all intact and seemingly in perfect working order.
I installed this gearbox last fall, it's a hybrid with a S4 box and S5 tailshaft housing that's worked fine and suffered no abuse at my hands.

And this is the thanks I get.

I absolutely dread the prospect of pulling the trans out again, especially since Sigfrid will be unavailable and I'll be working solo. I've done it before and suppose I can again, unless a less drastic approach is revealed.

So I'm at an impasse...there's no point finishing the cat install if it has to come right out to drop the transmission.
Basically, the job I was (semi) prepared for has to wait until a problem I didn't have yesterday is solved.

Yikes.

Still no progress on the trans issue but a bit of good news anyway... I just passed emissions!
Yesterday I installed a new cat- the cheapest POS Rock Auto sells- which was way harder than it should have been as the air injection flange was clocked 90° out of phase.
The plan is to now remove the cat and replace with the hollowed out OEM unit, save the "new" one for the next test in two years.
One must play the game.

For some inexplicable reason I was convinced she'd pass and I did absolutely no prep or setup for this test-well, excluding the cat, of course.
I usually do all this little stuff first but this time I sailed in on a wing and a prayer and she skated on through and it wasn't even close.
So hooray for that.

The good news tide continues to roll...the shifting issue is fixed.
I'll accept little credit- it was an obvious and simple fix- but must assume all the blame.
After all, I was the original installer and I'm also the person who resisted removing the transmission cover plate, which is what finally revealed that the detent on the rear of the shifter chamber had backed out.
Snug that cap screw back up and full function is restored.

A blessedly simple resolution.

Sigfrid reports that the Z has been running well as he continues tinkering with the timing.
The ECU has theoretically finished the learning cycle and knows what's what and he says it's noticably better than last week.

We've been here before.

You know us so well.

Fortunately, the past week hasn't revealed any new major issues to justify an engine swap solution. We still have the problems with the rest of the car (primarily, the diff and electrical) but all the engine stuff is looking good.
Now that it's getting hot outside, heat soak is going to be an issue and we had spent time brainstorming solutions. One potential weak spot is the engine harness, which runs right over the manifolds next to the valve cover. We considered all sorts of ways to insulate the harness before finally realizing that the best move would be to relocate the harness altogether and sidestep the problem rather than fix it.
This adjustment will hopefully lead to an entire redo of the electrical system, something we both agree is necessary but recent detours have distracted us from.
It's a big job and the only question is when to tackle it.

My FC is back to fully operational after the brief transmission scare, she went on her first major outing since the fix and was completely normal.
Now I just have to force myself back under the car to swap out the cats again.

Know what's weird about this whole forum thing?
The better you are, the less you have to talk about.

It's been two weeks and both the Z and my FC are running fine...this may be a record for the Z.
This respite from mechanical whack-a-mole has unleashed speculation about our next moves and some weird stuff is happening.

Sigfrid has become fixated on chassis rigidity and was intrigued by the Miata frame rail stiffeners/crossbraces.
He's having a set bent up in the fab shop at work, which ought to be interesting. Install will be a nightmare I think, what with the underside already undercoated and the sound matting in the interior.
He's also intoxicated by this three point front strut brace...a really nice/useful looking piece that absolutely will not fit with our intake manifold/throttle body.

I'll be housesitting there next week and plan on more modest projects, primarily heat mitigation in the engine bay.
Need to wrap the headers and redo the engine wiring harness to move it away from the problem areas.
Not real sexy, but necessary.

"Interesting" in the sense that nothing has happened yet.
Riveting stuff.

Coupla things have happened lately.
First...wtf is going on with Photobucket?
Half my pics have disappeared from forums, they have a new limitation on what percentage of your pics can be hotlinked and they want $400 for unlimited usage.
Yeah, that's not going to happen.
Not sure what will happen now, this must be killing forums...

The FC got a cursory tuneup- plugs, oil/filter, adjust TPS- and continues to run just fine.

I've been housesitting for Sigfrid, spent three of the last five weeks over there and finally got some seat time in the Z.
Really getting close to being a decent street car.
Only one thing holding her back right now and that's a weird electrical glitch, which we plan to address this winter.

What happens is, under certain conditions (specifically, killing battery power with the engine off but the efan running) resets the ECU in the EFI unit...it forgets all it's tuning strategies and even what engine it's running.
All the initial setup must be reinputted and the "200 mile learning curve" begins again.
(The car does seem to run better as it "learns" but I'm dubious about this "200 mile" part as the ECU has no way of knowing if the car is even moving, much less how far...)

Anyway, if you can avoid lobotomizing the ECU, she's a real fun ride around town.
The instant torque is shocking to both S. and I after we get out of our rotaries (recall that Sigfrid still dailies his RX8) and the Z feels much smaller than our regular cars, even though it's not that much tinier.
It does weigh less, that's for sure.

Yesterday we finally got some time together and tinkered around a bit- mostly rejiggering the engine harness to see if the ECU wiping could be eliminated (so far, it has) and addressing a rear suspension bolt that keeps coming loose. I might safety wire that sumbitch if it doesn't straighten up and fly right.

Sigfrid has a full roster of houseguests for August, not sure if we'll get much done for a few weeks, the hope is the Z will just be OK and driveable for a while.

I'm hopeful this nonsense thread will make a quarter million page views...it's my main life goal right now.

Photobucket has screwed us all. As my friend pointed out, think of the knowledge base they wiped from the internet on how-to's and other reference pics. All gone and many of them likely to never come back. But, they made their decision and are sticking to it.

Photobucket will continue to lose subscribers in droves with their poor choices. I know of at least half-a-dozen personal friends who have migrated to different sharing platforms. They will lose traffic to their site which is plagued by ads, so they lose money even more. This really is a travesty and a death knell to the forums in general. More and more people are jumping ship to Facebook groups, which is sad because most of the groups are populated by people asking the same dumb questions that have been posted here for years.

Hey, at least the Z seems to be running well provided the ECU keeps power.
