Question Shakey steering at higher speeds

Hey Folks, I just put on new rims and tires (all balanced). I noticed that my steering is pretty shakey at high speeds. Low speeds 50 and below hardly notice any shaking. I'm sure it is not the tires or rims. It did it with my previous set of tires but I figured it would go away once I changed out the tires and rims. Think this could be ball joints bad?

To be sure, i'm going to take them to another tire place and have them recheck the balance.

Well, it's probably the balance. Could be a machine that is not set properly. Have them put the assembly back up on the balancer and rerun checking needed weights inside and outside. If ok, have them rerun on the machine without breaking the weights inside/outside and see if any different results. Another thought is if they have a different hub bore, did you use the spacer that is required, even though the lugs nuts should center the wheel.

wheel balance is very common to have a shimmy at particular speeds. For example the wheel might be balanced close enough to be fine at under 50 mph, and have a nasty out of balance at 65 mph, and then feel better at 75 mph.

That is a classic example of an out of balance wheel.

I have had the EXACT problem that you just stated Icemark.

Definitely check the balance.

There is no spacer. The offset on this is 40mm. I asked the manufacturer before I puchased them if it was required. I'll find some place local to re-check the balance....

If it's only at 90 mph or so & above, check the ball joints first...

It's above 60 miles an hour and smooths out about 75 ( but still a little shakey).

Definetly sounds like a rotational balance problem, then

Or a damaged/bent wheel.

I got a set of ADR wheels off ebay, that no matter what, could not be balanced perfectly.
