I thought about pulling the radiator back a few inches so its more vertical and routing an intake in front of the radiator behind the grill. It'd be up enough that isn't directly in the grill opening and it wouldn't require any permanent cutting. I wont cut a huge hole in my engine bay until I'm sure I wont ever sell the car lol.

i can see making the hole bigger and adding padding would be a better idea as adrock said, but i'm just waiting for a little rust on the bare metal, then i will ospho and paint it and make the pipe physically connected to the sheet metal with a large hose clamp around the pipe and a bracket bolted to the car. crude, cheap, and effective. this is assuming i have time between 3 classes, my other project and work... lol

you might also have fitment issues with the clutch fan and (unless you sealed off the sides) would make a gap where incoming air would just go around the radiator.

i don't know about horsepower... i would guess more along the lines of 5-10 based on a couple formulas. intake temp has very direct effect on power from what i've read and experienced.
there is also throttle response and heat soak to take into account. i was very pleased with the mod. if someone put my stock intake on overnight i would probably be able to tell.
