I haven’t been here very long but I have been trying to get the same question answered.
As far as the engine goes, this is what I have found:
Injectors – Have different connectors. Some S4 cars (87.5 or earlier) had low impedance injectors and required a resistor pack located in front of the passenger side strut tower.
OMP – is electronically controlled on the S5 and mechanically controlled on the S4. The bolt patter for the pumps are also different so you need to change the front cover if you want to swap OMP’s.
BAC – is located in a different spot and has a different connector on it. But I believe it operates in the same manner between series.
O2’s - have a different plug on them for some reason.
VDI – S5’s have it and S4’s do not. It is ECU controlled on the S5’s
5/6th ports – are also triggered electronically on the S5 via a vacuum actuator in the “Vac Rack”. They are controlled by exhaust back pressure or something on the S4’s.
Rotors – are lighter on the S5, thus the flywheels and counter weights are different.
Emissions – A bunch of emissions stuff is different between the two.
If you remove the air pump on a S5’s the VDI or 5/6th ports will not work.
