Series 4 TII - SWAP to - Series 5 TII - Questions on Electrical
I have just finished swapping out a Series 4 Engine, ECU Harness, and ECU for a Series 5 Engine, ECU Harness, and ECU. Everything is done except for the connector for the Chassis Harness into the ECU. I am well aware of the fact that the Chassis Harness from a Series 4 does not plug into the Series 5 ECU, but I have a few questions.
Things to consider:
1. I do not care for emissions at all, therefore NO EMISSIONS.
2. I have done a search on the forum (many times - many different keywords and no go) and have not turned up anything useful.
3. I just want the car running with all accessories functional (PW,PL,AC, HEAT, Etc...)
4. I've hooked up the sensor in the Oil pan by splicing the wires together (there is one more wire left [black] which is for another sensor in the oil pan - Series 4 only - I left that one unhooked.
5. For the series 4 the TPS connector is on the Chassis Harness and Series 5 is on the Engine Harness. I have not spiced them together - YET - only the Series 5 TPS connector on the Engine Harness is hooked up.
Questions:
1. On the engine harness after you have fished it through into the interior there are four connectors at the end. Two are for the ECU (Left and Centre) and two are left (For the series 4: they connect to another connector which I'm guessing is for the rest of the dash harness, and the other goes into a little back device (looks like a some sort of sensor). What are these connectors and do I have to splice them in to get the functionality I want?
2. What are the two sensors in the Series 4 Oil pan compared to the Series 5 and what do I do with the other missing sensor connector for the series 4 chassis harness?
3. For Series 5 the TPS is wired in throught the Engine Harness, but for the method I have chosen to do this swap will I have to splice the additional TPS connector on the Series 4 Chassis Harness? (My guess is no)
4. Now, heres the big one. I know that the very last connector that goes into the Series 5 ECU (RIGHT Side) is different comming from the Series 4 Chassis harness, I have have a cut connector for a Series 5 Chassis Harness which fits into the last socket in the ECU, if I trace and spice in all the required connections, will the car run? (Note: Question is will it run reguardless of some of the interior functions not working like AC).
5. Has anyone been sucessful in Swaping in a Series 5 Engine, Engine Harness, and ECU in the a Series 4 Turbo Rx7?

im looking into doing the same thing but mines na .. i think the nly im worried about is the body harness. im trying to figuire out how im gonna make this work .. i dont feel like swapping front covers and what not

Why it's so hard to buy the right **** and plug it in, I don't know.
These sort of swaps really tweak my nerves. No offsense intended though, it just seems like the hard way of doing things, for no other reason than doing things the hard way. There is no gain to be had from cross series swaps...both sets of parts cost roughly the same, and are roughly the same availability wise.

UPDATE - Finally got it beast running took 6.5 hours (excluding the engine R&R). I am in the process of a complete detailed outline on the rewiring of getting a Series 5 Turbo Engine, Harness, and ECU running in a Series 4 Turbo Chassis.
I'm still the the process mind you. I've got a hell of an exaust leak (at the turbo - when you gun it it has no power -its almost scary sounds like a blown engine ) and I have yet to wireup the following:
- Factory Boost Gauge
- Factory Temp. Gauge
- Self-Diagnosis Check (Monitor Lamp)
- Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) Lamp
- Self-Diagnosis Checker (Malfunction Code Number)
- Power Steering (P/S) Pressure Switch (Is there even ones in Series 4?)
So for all the guys who are posting on whether or not they can install a Series 5 engine, harness, and ECU in a Series 4 Chassis. Yes you can, but it is a lot of work. BUT it is about the same as taking the Series 5 block and stripping it down to a short block, transferring all your support hardware from your S4 (with the S4 front cover and oil pan), and then installing it. I think it is even a bit easlier provided you have a step by step color coded, and picture guide. WHICH I PLAN ON POSTING as soon as I have time.

Even if it is the same amount of work, most people here are better mechanics than electricians, myself included. And, if you tear down a longblock, you get to inspect all the parts along the way, and perhaps do some mods, cleaning, or replacement too. That's how I look at it, anyway.
Glad you got it running, look forward to your writeup. You wouldn't have needed to make a writeup had you bought the right stuff for your car, though, since plug and play is pretty straightfoward
