sent injectors to RC for cleaning -- interesting results
I sent my injectors to RC Engineering from my 87 NA (90k miles, running pretty well). The results from their pre-cleaning tests were interesting:
--One injector was operating fairly close to normal -- correct fuel flow, and a "good" spray pattern.
--Two were flowing fuel reasonably well, but dripping, not spraying (which also means they were probably leaking)
--The fourth was flowing fuel at ONE TENTH of specification, and also dripping.
After treatment, RC reported normal fuel flow and an excellent fuel flow from all of them. Total cost including return shipping was $108. I will report on the results when they're back in the car.
But it seems pretty clear that dumping fuel injector cleaner in the ol' gas tank wasn't doing the job ...

new hardware is not included.
it is a good idea to install new o-rings and top and bottom gaskets on each injector, all available from Mazdatrix. Total cost for all four injectors would be about $25.

actually, I didn't particularly think the car had a problem with the injectors, except that maybe they were leaking 'cause I was getting some white smoke on startup and (twice) the flooding problem.
but I'd taken apart the entire manifold to a) find a gas leak (bad hose) and b) fix my auxiliary ports (gummed up), so I thought as long as I was down there, I might as well pull all the injectors and send them in.
But the car was running fine ... I thought it lacked power at high speeds, but I'm pretty sure it was the auxiliary ports not opening. I assume, though, that having one injector essentially not working didn't help ... I'm guessing it was one of the secondary injectors that wasn't pumping much gas.
