Select-Lock Spindle Question ???

I recently dropped the tranny on my 88 vert to change the Return to Center Spring and replace some seals. With that completed I have ran into a confusing situation with the Select-Lock Spindle, Spring and Spring Cap. The select-lock spindle has a flat side with a couple of grooves and a rounded side. (see pics) When attempting to insert the select-lock spindle behind the shift control case it will only go in two different ways... With the flat side facing the control rod end or facing away. both ways seem to work, however, there must be only one correct way to do it considering that the Steel Ball, Spring and Spring Cap go directly perpendicular to it and must somehow be affected by the way the select-lock spindle sits. I wish I would have paid more attention to this part when I removed them initially. Could anyone with experience in having put these parts back together please help me out... Also a brief explanation on why the select-lock spindle goes in a certain way would be greatly appreciated.

I truly don't have much of a clue other than the jpg attached that came out of the MANUAL TRANSMISSION section of the FSM. It SEEMS the flat is on the left side of the transmission.

Like I say, I DON'T REALLY KNOW for sure. Just a guess til someone who knows answers. Something to think about while you wait.
