seat belt light
seat belt light
This is a weird one - the last few days my seat belt warning light comes on as the car warms up and then pulses as long as the car is turned on - don't matter whether I am wearing the belt or not - it's not a big deal except at night when this pulsing red eye right in my line of vision is bloody annoying! Does anybody know how to disconect the thing without getting into the circuit board, or is it in the CPU?
Also my light switch is going - all dash lights are starting to flicker on and off, more off than on recently - I am sure it's the switch as it affects every dash light including the heater - is there a repair or do I treck to the wreckers again for another switch?

I love my 92 TII's auto-belts. They add to the whole sport car experience.
For the seat belt light, the retractor sensor probably needs replacing. Note there is an UPGRADED!!! part # that permanently fixes this. Send me a PM if you'd like it.

To fix. Remove the CPU. Lower left kick pannel. Open er up and resolder the connector where the harness connects. The solder points crack and cause all sorts of fun. (better description of how to in the FAQ)
I did this and the light only comes on right after the car is started (like it is suppose to).
okay....

Is there a special reason that it cant be posted?
I have this same problem on all my 1991s
Also, be advised that all those with seatbelts that dont retract, there is a lifetime recall on this!
Its a free fix at the dealer!
Also if the light is flashing double check to see that the plug under the drivers seat is not disconnected. That can cause the seat belt warning light to flash as well.

I have an 87 n/a - there ain't no plugs under the driver's seat - had it out recently.
The CPU thing sounds much more likely - open door chime doesn't work either unless it feels like it.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
1. Slide rearward and recline both front seats.
2. Sit in the driver's seat and attach each lap belt in the appropriate buckles.
3. Close both front doors and turn the ignition switch ON to ramp the shoulder belt assemblies rearward to the set position.

^ If the dash light illuminates (even monetarily) replace the retractor switch as outlined in the Repair Procedure.
^ If the light does not illuminate, refer to the workshop manual, BETM or wring diagram for repair information.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Remove key from ignition.
2. Remove rear console (arm rest).
3. Disconnect the retractor switch harness and remove connector from bracket.
4. Release shoulder belts from buckles.

8. Remove the retractor switch cover, insulator and contact plate.
CAUTION : DO NOT allow refractor gears to fall out of place. DO NOT touch the contact plate or insulator with your hand. DO NOT allow foreign material to enter refractor assembly.
9. Inspect the contact points for unusual wear or damage.^ If contacts are badly worn or damage is present, replace the retractor assembly.
^ If no unusual wear or damage is present, the problem may be due to part misalignment. Proceed to step 10.
10. Verify that the seat belts are still fixed in position and assemble the contact plates, insulator and housing.
CAUTION : Refer to above precautions.
NOTE : Carefully align parts as shown.
11. Reconnect the retractor switch harness and place connector in bracket.
12. Remove the binder clip and masking tape from seat belt.
13. Reset both belts in appropriate buckles.

I have a 1989 TII and I have already had the recalls done on the car. One of which is the seatbelt recall. They give you brand new ones. If you want, I can get you the recall numbers. Just let me know.
The auto-seat belts have 2 TSBs I believe. 1 is for the general recall (lifetime repair on the auto-belts) and the other is for the retactor sensor causing the seat belt lamp to illuminate & buzzer to sound.
The manual seat belt TSB is for cleaning gunk out of the the rectractor housing so the seatbelt properly retracts when you "unbuckle."
The subscription is like $20-$30 year, and it's WELL worth it.
Best thing is they tell you to purchase a FIXED part vs a direct defective OEM replacement. Plus most all of the quirks are identified associated with the car.
Alldata makes a great tool for researching a used car. I loved the fact the rx-7 only had quirks listed.

You can get rid of the buzzer by disconnecting the male/female end of the connection wires at the base of the seat belt clicker thing.
For the light, I'm probably just going to disconnect the light in the cluster. :| I don't wanna mess with the CPU.
