Question Searched, but still questions on auto to manual swap.

I have searched but still have a few questions. I'm doing the swap and getting rid of my useless automatic for a 5 speed. I have a 91 NA with no mods so here are the questions.

1. Do I need to stay within the S5 range as far as the donor transmission or can I use an 86, 87, etc?

2. Is there any real advantage to going with a TII transmission if possible? Does it give any performance increase?

3. Definitely planning on changing to the lsd for my final drive. Any serious problems waiting for me?

I know the basics on most of this and I have read all the different write ups of the swap. I know that I will need to match flywheel with donor tranny, weld in ears (or use some good ole southern ingenuity{riggin}) and most of the no brainers but I need help with the fiddly bits before I start sourcing parts. Thanks a million guys.

1. I've got a 90 (s5) that im raping an S4 onto...
2. More durable. Won't goto the ******* in 16 months. (Disadvantages: Requires aftermarket driveshaft from Mazdatrix [$200] or drilling of the original to mount to n/a 3rd memeber. Also requires different flywheel [you need a dif one anyway] and clutch assembly from T2)
3. Get an S5 GTUs, they have a 4.3 rear end that i believe is LSD. Your original 3rd member that came with the auto is only a 3.9, good for high speeds and gas mileage, bad for accelleration.

Weld in ears? The tranny mounts are off by about 5 inches. Theres some folks on the forum that sell the adaptors for $50.00. I have a set and they are damn nice.

Don't forget the pedal assembly. Its a huge pain in the *** without removing the steering column (which I had to do). And do that you need to nearly remove the break booster.

Have experience in electronics before you do this, I started 5 months ago (its beena long process) and am leaving the wiring for last, as it appears to be a small nightmare. Reverse lights, most of the starting system... I'd do the TB and remove the rats nest if you are seriously into modding it. Removing the tranny is 10 times easier when you can reach behind the engine w/o all the damn intake crap on it. There are some pics of my progress here...

Thanks for the help guys. Also I heard from another thread that you might be able to drop a miata 6 speed in a S5. Anybody able to kill that myth or is it the real thing?
