Screw Type Fuel Line Clamps

Although I've seen this information before, I'm just going to say that I advise not using them. I didn't know that I shouldn't when I put them on and haven't had time to replace them. What finally convinced me is what I found yesterday while I was replacing my TPS (yay for a real idle!). I'm just glad I was looking around my engine bay.

I played with the line a little (wiggled it a bit) and fuel did indeed spray out a bit. Nothing major, but fuel none the less.

Here's some pictures of my "find". The first thing I'm doing to my car when I can is putting on the spring type clamps.

P.S. Thanks for the TPS J-Rat! It's nice to have a steady idle (when I'm not using any electronics). Nice and sweet at around 900 (now to find my throttle adjust screw...).

So what are the best clamps for rubber fuel lines? I'm going to do a full AN line conversion when I do injectors though.

I've been looking forever for some super small t bolt clamps that will go over the 1/4 inch lines. Anybody got a source for these?

Good catch. You can pick up some specialty FI hose damps from an auto supply store (I got mine from NAPA). They look something like this:

It wasn't that they were cutting the lines, it's that they were slipping off. The screw type, apparently, loosen themselves over time.

happened a few times to mine in the same are too. but i reccomend them over the spring type like the stock ones.

I put a small dab of red locktite on the screws and they have not given me trouble since

Ahh, I thought it was that the regular ones form a gap beneath the screw, especially when the radius is small. You can see the FI ones have a band that tries to keep a gap from forming. I think I'll put some thread locker on mine tonight!

Hmmm, loctite is a good idea. Does it make them hard to take off?

I might just go with a spring type and a screw type. I don't see how it can hurt to have 2 on each line.

On my RX-7, I use aircraft hose clamps. A little extra cost, but will hold and not damage the hose if over-tightened as part of the clamp covers the serrated portion, and blocks it from cutting into the hose.

it's difficult to crank those down enough to cut true high pressure fuel line so i crank them down quite a bit, but those clamps have a tendency to strip out before they are to a safe tightness range for fuel lines. you can either double up those clamps with a spring clamp or run a high pressure fuel line clamp, most people just never realized they make clamps made specifically for this purpose.

problem with spring clamps is over time they lose their spring and holding power so more often than not i try not to use them.

(In my best Hanz & Franz voice) I think you guys are all a bunch of limp wristed girly-men.. (end of voice). I have never had a clamp loosen, or have never tightened down a clamp on fuel line so hard that it tore through. But not all you guys have the physique of this Adonis-like CPA here.

I've only ever used screw clamps on fuel lines and I've never had a single problem. I've certainly never had one unscrew itself. Are you sure it was tight enough to begin with?

For the record I've also never been dumb enough to screw them down tight enough to damage the hose so badly it's unsafe. A bit of deformation of the outer surface is fine. IMO there's a lot of needless scaremongering about screw clamps, but I think most of that has come problems caused by from improper use.

Wow, Im reverse, first thing I do is get away from the factory spring clamps. Ive never in my life seen a screw type clamp back itself out. Then again maybe Ive been lucky and been buying the right brand clamps. I surely would trust a screw over a srping any day of the week. Just my $.02

I tighten them down pretty damn tight. Maybe I just missed that one, but I don't think I did. Since you don't want scaremongering, I will say the other 3 in that area were just fine.

How about this for the new thread theme. Make sure you tighten your clamps and check them often.
