Schmoooookin Baby!

I already had this posted in the Tech support forum but was informed it would be best viewed here.

"Baby" aka "Smoke Bomb" 89 RX-7 GXL Non-Turbo Fuel Injected 13B Motor 212,000 miles.

Ok well it's obvous she smokes but when I start her up she single handedly causes a 1st stage smog alert. Right now I'm looking at my options and what to do. Since I'm an absolute newbie to both this board and RX's in general please be gentile with the answers to my questions. Oh, BTW I did do a search which only netted a few select results. So please don't beat me too much

Symptoms:
On start up she causes a 1st stage smog alert oil smoke just pours out of the exhaust. Now, after warming up this will subside to a "normal" oil burn or just dissappear all together. Other times like for instance this morning she didn't smoke at all when I started her but up above that infamous 4K barrier she started bellowing smoke like a 1910 tramp steamer. So I'm figuring there is just something not quite right with the oil injection system. Am I on the right path here? Or am I going to be ambushed by some rotorary headed monster?

Alrighty, what are my likely options? I'm the second owner of "Baby" and I know she has recieved the best care an RX of her vintage could possibly recieve. Now with that in mind, what could be my causes for the excessive smoking problem she has?

Possible solutions I have avalible to me are:

Rebuilding/resealing the motor myself. Is this easy like piston engines?

Swapping in another 13b engine. Can I do this with an older/newer one and just swap over my current FI junk?

I have heard about some sort of oil injector that sometimes goes haywire. Is this an easy fix? That is if it exists.

Any possible tricks and/or additives that might help the problem? at least until I can afford to swap in another engine or possibily purchase a rebuilt motor?

your going to need a rebuild, your oil control rings are shot, it happens. its easy, ive rebuilt piston motors, and rotaries, and the rotary was easier by far than the piston. if you attempt it yourself get a rebuild video from atkins rotary.

you could swap a different motor in, but you wont really be assured of its quality. or compression, i would go rebuild. but you can pick up a good used motor for 3-400$ for a n/a. it will cost around 5-700$ for a rebuild if you do it youself, if your houseings arent screwed.

the oil injectors feel oil to the combustion chambers, they are usually pretty reliable, unless the hoses that run to them melt, you can see them on the front of your engine, on the passenger side, there 4 clear/white hard hoses.

sorry, no tricks for the oil smoke.

The cause is mostlikly the oil rings inside the engine. To fix this you have to take apart the engine and replace most of the seals but it would be a better deal to get a full rebuild kit and save yourself the pain of doing it again.

I would shoose this route over another used engine because you could have mixed results with a new(to you) motor which can leave you in the same sitiuation as your in now or worse.

NOTE: 86-88 and 89-92 engines are different slightly so try to keep in mind this when lookinf for replacement parts.

LOL! Chupalo!
I have the same symptoms in my car, she smokes at start ups not too much for five min, then after the warm up its all right, me and santiago couldn't fix the problem from outside the engine so that leads to bad oil seals, anyways replacing all seals with new and not reusing the old ones would be best, rebuilding a rotary is easier than a **** on, as far as i know, buy a rebuild kit .

Why does everyone think automatically that the oil control rings would be shot. Its a good guess at 212K But before I rebuilt my motor I had 214K on mine and my rings were within tolorance. (on hindsight I shoulda just replaced them anyway) B

One thing I noticed when my first FC blew a coolent seal was that it did white smoke but not like a steam train. There was this sweet antifreeze smell.

But what could also cause this might be that its flooding a bit and when it starts, it burns all that excess away.

When I first got my rebuild to start it was a bitch. It would take at least an 1/2 hour to get it to start and when it did, it white smoked like nuts and as described would dissapear all together. It would run fine the whole day. It was when it sat for longer than 7 hours that it would become irritable again. I solved this problem by taking out the Aftermarket fuel injectors
I installed and replacing them with the Mazda OEM's

So I would lean more towards the primary fuel injectors are leaking when he shuts the car off to turn in for the night. Next morning. White Smoke.

That's be my guess.
