If your region has ITE or SPU the car maybe elegible for that, ask around the region.

What's the requirements for my Base 87'? What do I need to do to put my car (or join a racing class). Is there any in Fla or in NY?

Answer these questions first:

Am I prepared to install a roll cage in my car?

Am I prepared to have someone (including me) accidentally wreck my car thru driver error?

Am I prepared to spend 5-10K to prepare my car for competition?

Do I have room to store my car, tow vehicle, and trailer, or am I prepared to pay someone to store them for me?

Am I prepared to give up any pretense of a social life at least two weekends a month during the racing season to prep and race my car?

If you answered no for any of those questions, IMHO, don't bother going down the club racing path at this time.

You may be better off going autocrossing (timed runs in over a cone course), or open-tracking (driving your car on track, with other cars, but not in actual competition, absolutely no body contact allowed). Actual door to door racing is a huge drain on your budget and time, and you have to follow some very esoteric rules (for example, I can install $5K triple adjustable remote reseviour shocks, but I can't remove my windshield washer bottle)

If I haven't scared you off yet, then let me cover the classes your car could race in.

Improved Touring S (ITS) - Pretty much any coupe body style, normally aspirated 86-91 RX-7. Stock engine, stock drivetrain. Exhaust is free for the most part, intake after the AFM is free, suspension must be stock geometry, but open on shocks, springs, bushings, etc). 6pt bolt in cage is legal, but for headroom-sake, get a custom welded cage, there's not a lot of room in there. Interior requires the dash, doorskins, and the heater core, but most everything else can be removed. Minimum weight around 2600 is required. 15x7" wheels, any DOT tire.

E Production - Coupe or convertible NA RX-7, I don't know the specific rules. Definitely lighter, fewer rules, fender flares and slicks allowed. Have to have a fuel cell, some engine work allowed, but I don't know the specifics.

ITE - Depends on the SCCA region, but this is a catch all class in most regions. Any car that meets Improved Touing preparation rules should be allowed to run ITE on DOT tires

SPU/O - Super Production Under/Over . All I can tell you is that a lot of wierd stuff runs in SP. I've seen NASCAR stock cars, a wicked 74 Vette, and a tubeframe Porsche 911 GT2 running in that class. I know they require a cell, but you'll definitely want to read the rules for all of these classes to decide where you fit.

Regards,

PaulC

Careful with those RR shocks. Don't get caught with them next year.

Silkworms right on the mark. WTW racing is expensive and time consuming. Plan on having atleast two good friends to help you out alot too. And just like spare parts have two friends in reserve for when the primaries get tired of dealing with your shiot or the long hours.

Other than SCCA check out NASA at www.nasaproracing.com There are other regional clubs too. But you'll basically have to be liscensed through NASA or SCCA to get on the track.

ITS

ITS and the fun of deciphering rules...

Who here has built an ITS car and are they willing to put up with a long litany of newbie questions? I am looking for a mentor. I have a Base 1987 that has already been upped to GXL axles, hubs and brakes. I need to use the car for a few more months as a daily getaway car... any tips on what I can do and stay street legal with the intent of moving the car into SoloI then ITS... I am well prepared to rip out the interior, seats, AC (its already off the belt), sound deadening etc...

I am prepping myself to buy a full exhaust (all the way back) and am currently researching the best bang for the buck...any help would be appreciated. The car will have to meet GA emissions for one year (I plan on having another car in place prior to re-upping the registration).

PM with suggestions or if you wanna chat.

Shane

P.S. Here's the car in its current state:

Shane,

E-Mail away. pcabana@newsguy.com.. Did I forget to respond to your last one?

Chris,

And WRT to the RR shocks, I can't afford them even if they were legal next year.

If your not totally prepared to park the car and build it for a specific class then don't waste your time. Once you are ready to park it and start building you will definetly want a rule book for that class or type of racing. It not impossible to build a racecar that can be driven on the street just impractical. You'll end up with a bad street car and a slow racecar.

I do realize that trying to make a dual purpose car is impractical. This car will only be dual purpose for a little while. There are certain things that can be done, that will not limit me from either... and I do not initially plan to go ITS racing. First step will be autocrossing, then Solo I and finally ITS. I need to get a few more ducks in a row before I can Wheel to Wheel it. One of the biggies is a a third ride (my wife works in the opposite direction... i.e. no car pooling), followed there after by a truck and trailer. And I'll need to get an SCCA license.

As I said, any helpful advice is welcome!!!!

Rats Back - You've got the right order of things. Autocrossing, SoloI and WTW. I've been trying to get my ducks in a row for the last year on my FP car(soloII only I might add) and its finally coming together. I got my engine this past weekend. Good luck with it.
