SAFE top speed for a convertible

Anybody have any idea what the top speed is that you could achieve "safely" in an 88 convertible? This is assuming good tires, suspension, etc. I'm trying to understand it from the aerodynamics point of view.

Thanks.

The road underneath you will have a huge affect on what you could possibly do. As well as the wind. As long as the sticky side stays down, you're good.

Let's just assume it's a long relatively straight and flat highway on a calm night.

True...but I'd like to worry about that beforehand. Once the sticky side is no longer down, it's a little too late then.

I've done 150 before (on an empty highway late at night) and the front end wasn't too loose. Just wondering if anybody had any more info.

You've got ***** to be doing 150 anywhere but a drag or air-strip. Any number of things can go wrong at those speeds and many of them have dire consequences, have fun but BE CAREFUL. A question, why the hell would you want to take your car to 155-170+ whatever you are trying to hit? Also remember your Speedometer is horribly innacurate at high speeds and can make very false readings. Just a thought. What mods do you have to get your 88 vert above 145 in the first place I would be curious to know.

Yes, you are correct. That is why I choose to do it on an empty highway late at night. At least if I screw up then, it is only me that doesn't come back.

I dunno. It is undergoing some changes and I have a desire to do a top down, top speed run. I just don't want to cross a line if there is one that someone is aware of.

A T3/TO4E among other things helps.

Around 130, my car would feel a little loose. I decided to push it one night and did 150. I'd like to go further when the car get backs together; especially after putting on new springs, struts, and a suspension bushing kit.

I know they would be similar aerodynamically- how did your car feel at those speeds? What condition was your car in then?

i have a turbo convertible and I had it to 158mph with plenty of pedal and rpm to go...feels good at that speed..better with the top down than with it up...I raced a Mustang GT(after the European Premier of Too Fast Too Fourious)..was behind him till about 145 and then decided that I should pass him or I would end up on his rear bumber...backed off the pedal at 158..speedo. only goes to 160...EGT was good and boost was good...just make sure you have speed rated tires that can handle that..I have W but Z will do for that speed..i cruise at 130mph at regular intervals and still get passed..gotta love the Autobahn...there is a calculation you can do do figure out the top speed of your car and at that RPM I was only off by 3mph..I wil look it up and post it

ok..here it is

Speed=(T.C)x(RPM)/(1056)x(A.R.)x (T.R.)
TC is outside rear tire circumference in inches

AR Rear Axle ratio(Ring and Pinion)

TR Tranny ratio in any gear you want to use
RPM-given

Youre 88 should have a 5th gear of .697
and a AR of 4.1

good luck

my car felt FANTASTIC at that speed.

my TII feels better at 160 than my prelude did at 90...

I would have pushed it more but I was allready at redline (or damn close.. like 6900rpm).. and I was starting to come up on traffic.

yeah you gota love the high speed aerodynamic stability of the FC. just make sure the underpan is on and the tires are up to pressure. should be safe until it tops out.

I think I went like 130 with the top down over a long, straight bridge on a Sunday morning.

Before one of my oil seals inside the engine blew out last week, i had taken my vert up to duluth from rochester, mn and on a good stretch of road where i knew there wouldn't be anybody else i tried gettin her faster and with everything stock aside form a mazdatrix true dual exhaust i got her up to 132 with the top down. It was fun going that fast but i knew i really shouldn't have done it, at least until after i had finished my cigarette.

Oh and one more thing i forgot to mention, i think i still had a few hundred rpm's that i coudl have pushed her up but i just didn't feel safe going that fast. I'm a bit of a *****, BUT the car was amazingly stable and in control on the road going that fast

the vert is alot heavier than the coupe thus giving the more stable feeling at higher speeds

Has anybody gone 150 in a 97 s10, I have . We hit that going through town, we smoked some good weed, so our danger meter was non existed. A 350 with 11:1 compression is what we got running in it. And 73 chargers aren't meant to go 160 or have twin turbos .

I thought rx7's were unsafe at any speed?
I've got to 150 before easily in an 88na-turbo, and 140 not so easy in a stock 88 na... then i've hit 160 before in my na-turbo with the 4.1 FDR tranny...
Although, im proudest of this: One time in a parking lot, when I was learning how to drift, I got within about 1/2" of a lightpole. My mirror woulda hit it. This scared me so i did some runs up and down, doing ebrake 180's at the end. One time, I got up to about 100 in 3rd and decided to try downshifting to get around. 11,000 RPM's or so in 2nd... scary as hell... didn't hurt the motor tho... and it was neat too :-D you can get to 100 really fudgin fast...

Dunno why I get this name posting but doesn't matter, I have an 88 vert that has basically everything that's better from an 88 TII swapped over. I hit 220km/h, I think around 140mph right on the *** of a brand new 350Z with the top down. Was it stupid? Yes. Did it feel incredibly good to be all over a car worth 5 times as much while he was trying to show his buddy how fast his new car is? HELL YES!
