S5 window switch cleaning

OK so I went into the archives and found the window switch cleanup thread since my driver's side window would not move at all and my passenger side mover very slowly. However it seems to be a bit different than my 1991 Rx7's set up. Here is what I found when I went about cleaning my switches.

Tools needed: Phillips screw driver, pocket knife or prying tool, wire brush to clean connections( i used a wire brush from a weapon's cleaning kit), and a rag to wipe off the dirt.

Time: about 1 hour (including time to find the springs you lost)

First unscrew all the screws( 4 under the armrest, 3 on the lower carpet, 1 up near the hinge, one in the door cup, and the elusive one behind the door cup holding the door on.
<a href="http://s865.photobucket.com/albums/ab215/9010Patrick/Power%20window%20switch/?action=view&current=100_1489.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab215/9010Patrick/Power%20window%20switch/100_1489.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Next unclip the switches and the door light.

Here is the driver's side switch out of the door. I already took out the screws that retain the circuit board to the plastic.
<a href="http://s865.photobucket.com/albums/ab215/9010Patrick/Power%20window%20switch/?action=view&current=100_1481.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab215/9010Patrick/Power%20window%20switch/100_1481.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

After the screws are out you can simply pull out the circuit board by the connector. And you end up with these two pieces.
<a href="http://s865.photobucket.com/albums/ab215/9010Patrick/Power%20window%20switch/?action=view&current=100_1482.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab215/9010Patrick/Power%20window%20switch/100_1482.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

You are concerned with the circuit board. and associated connections. There are two white boxes that house the window switches. I used a knife to CAREFULLY pry them off. You need to pull them up as well as release them from the side clips. Be careful when you do this because the springs in the switch will most likely fly out and become nearly impossible to find.
<a href="http://s865.photobucket.com/albums/ab215/9010Patrick/Power%20window%20switch/?action=view&current=100_1484.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab215/9010Patrick/Power%20window%20switch/100_1484.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Here is the switch off the circuit board. Notice the springs that I put back in place to show how it functions and how dirty it is.
<a href="http://s865.photobucket.com/albums/ab215/9010Patrick/Power%20window%20switch/?action=view&current=100_1486.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab215/9010Patrick/Power%20window%20switch/100_1486.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Now just give those connections a good cleaning and mine ended up like this.
<a href="http://s865.photobucket.com/albums/ab215/9010Patrick/Power%20window%20switch/?action=view&current=100_1488.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab215/9010Patrick/Power%20window%20switch/100_1488.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Just reassemble the pieces and do the other side. If you are unsure of how to put one side back together you can use the other for reference. When you put the circuit board back onto the plastic make sure that the actual plastic switches are in between open and closed so they fit correctly in between the pins you just cleaned.
At this point test the switches to ensure they move back and forth correctly before installing it in the door.

Now the passenger side...
Disassemble the door just like the driver's side and pull out the switch. It will look like this.
<a href="http://s865.photobucket.com/albums/ab215/9010Patrick/Power%20window%20switch/?action=view&current=100_1498.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab215/9010Patrick/Power%20window%20switch/100_1498.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

The connector is held on by clips on both sides. Just unclip it and it will come right out. Now once again carefully take apart the parts to be cleaned keeping a careful watch for flying springs. Once disassembled it will look like this.
<a href="http://s865.photobucket.com/albums/ab215/9010Patrick/Power%20window%20switch/?action=view&current=100_1490.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab215/9010Patrick/Power%20window%20switch/100_1490.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Dirty
<a href="http://s865.photobucket.com/albums/ab215/9010Patrick/Power%20window%20switch/?action=view&current=100_1491.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab215/9010Patrick/Power%20window%20switch/100_1491.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Clean
<a href="http://s865.photobucket.com/albums/ab215/9010Patrick/Power%20window%20switch/?action=view&current=100_1493.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab215/9010Patrick/Power%20window%20switch/100_1493.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Back together
<a href="http://s865.photobucket.com/albums/ab215/9010Patrick/Power%20window%20switch/?action=view&current=100_1496.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab215/9010Patrick/Power%20window%20switch/100_1496.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

and back in the door
<a href="http://s865.photobucket.com/albums/ab215/9010Patrick/Power%20window%20switch/?action=view&current=100_1499.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab215/9010Patrick/Power%20window%20switch/100_1499.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Thats all there is to it. My efforts unfortunately had no real effect on the performance of the switches so I will have to test the motors at a later date. I will update as work progresses.

Still working on getting some used window motors. I did get a chance to switch out my window switches with known good ones with no improvement so in my case the window motors have gone bad.
