S5 Turbo Removal

Hi everyone,
I'm trying to get the turbo off my S5 engine. I've got the 2 lower bolts, rear from under the car and front from up top. These were pretty easy. How the heck do you get a wrench with enough leverage to get at the top 2 that are tucked up underneath. Anyone with tips, tricks, advice is welcome. Really need to get it off to get to the LIM to fix those damn o-rings. Thanks all.

If you have a engine hoist you can remove the passenger side engine mount and then raise and lower the engine to give you the wiggle room. You can remove the driver side one and shimmy the whole engine over a big. There isnt a lot of room otherwise.

You can use an extension with a 14mm long shaft socket as well. You can get at almost all of them from above. Then just remove oil and coolant lines, and downpipe of course.

i have always just used a standard 14mm wrench for the turbo/manifold nuts. pulling the entire assembly can be easier at times...

If are still stock, the best bet is to remove the ACV(?).on the lower intake.it allows you to slip the turbo out easier and replace is quicker. If you have no emission stuff on the car it is easier.
the Exhaust manifold bolts are easy to get at with a 14mm socket down under, the top ones are Ok to get at with a 14mm wrench.(flex head gear wrench)
you will lose some coolant, removing the Line off the lower manifold to turbo,.so be ready with a Bucket or pan under the car.
the whole exhaust manifold and turbo assembly is a bit heavy( about 40 pounds) and a wee bit awkward to shove in it's place.I moved the wiring near the AFM area and created a snug little path to drop the whole unit in from that location.
anyways,Good luck,I hope that helps...By the way,I am doing the Same thing in about 8 hours!!(again..putting on another Hybrid..this time a BNR..wooohooo!).

I used a 14 mm combination wrench, I put the box end on the nut and I hook an extra wrench's box end to the 14mm's open end and apply torque with the extra leverage. The top front one though I had to do with just the bare hands and the 14mm wrench, it was a bitch but concentrate your strength. I was using a lift so I just put a stand under the engine loosened the passenger motor mount and lowered the lift causing the engine to raise out of it's mounting position, and that allowed easy removal of the turbo from the bottom, pretty easy. Also I didn't even try to remove the manifold, I just removed the turbo from the manifold and I didn't think it was too bad at all.

I actually just took my Turbo off today.I took the FMIC pipe off,the afm off.
Then I unbolted the downpipe, and took the Turbo and manifold out as one.
As I mentioned though,it has no emissions so it cleared everything. It was a tight fit but it came out through the Passenger top corner.

^^^when you say you pulled the turbo out the passenger top corner, do you mean the corner near the firewall or near the radiator support? Does your car have a/c? I think my a/c lines were in the way, and that's why I took it out the bottom.

Well, I'll give it another try this weekend. Kinda said screw it on Sunday and left it sit. Thanks for the advice and I guess we'll see what happens. I was going to try getting to the manifold bolts, but the heat shield for the manifold is in the way and won't come out......

BTW, I have no emission and the a/c is gone as well.

I pulled the turbo out with the Exhaust manifold still attached.I got it out through the Space in the Very FRONT Passenger Corner(behind the passenger light and between the Strut tower,Variable resistor etc).Pretty well where the Stock Air box used to be located.
You may have to Loosen the Wiring harness at the Clip on the car(below the steel coolant hose).Just make sure that there is room to manipulate the turbo Up and out without too much Screwin around,The darn thing isn't exactly light and it gets Frustrating quick if it gets hung up on little wires..(there isn't alot of room to just Set it there and take a Break.,it's like Make sure and DO IT in one go!).Make sure that the Unit won't snag any wires.!!
I hope that helps.Cheers Styx!

There's more than enough room to get it out the front like that. Most of the stuff that is usually there has been removed (air box, harness, radiator, etc). I just can't get to the manifold bolts because the damn heat shield won't come out from between the turbo and manifold. This thing is quite the bugger, just an absolute pain in the but to get the bolts out anyway you slice it. Hopefully get to mess with it on Saturday, started getting a little chilly here and haven't wanted to mess with it.

Oh ya.I forgot about that heat shield.I don't have one.sorry about that..The Front top bolt can be ascessed under the lower water pump outlet using a 14 mm Open or box end wrench. The bottom froont bolt is pretty well there too.
the Rear rotor exhaust bolts can be accesed under the Car,jack it up and secure it.They are just above the engine cross member location, you can actually get to Both..The trick is to have the Down pipe off first. It makes it alot easier to get at the bolts on the manifold/keg area.
I hope some of that helps you.I wish I would have the Shield on,I am persistent, and IF I can figure out an Easy way, hell I tell everyone!
