What do you mean by damper? On the front cover there is a little pin sticking out that matches 2 v shaped marks in the lower crank pulley. If the pin is missing, you should try and pull the stub out and replace it with a metal pin of some sort. There are other methods of finding TDC if you can't do it by the marks on the pulley. As you are looking at the front of the motor (facing the rear of the car), the mark on the left on the pulley is yellow (mark it with testors paint or something.

be really careful with this, many people have blown their motors from timing mistakes

the crank pulley and the pulley hub (where the eshaft bolt goes into) need to be matched from the same engine or your marks will be off.

I was in your situation and ended up biting the proverbial bullet and getting a new matched pulley/hub assembly from Ray Crowe of Malloy Mazda (forum vendor here). I think it was $170. It sounds steep but it's not that much more expensive than an aftermarket pulley and it gave me peace of mind

all the e shafts are the same, so you could take the pulley off, turn the crank to tdc looking at it the cut for the key is at 9 oclock. and then reindex the pulley if needed
