S5 to S4 swap, same as S4 to S4?

Just curious, I tried a search, but you can't search for anything less than three letters (S4) anyway, can a 91 TII engine be dropped into an 87 TII with the same amount of "difficulty" or labor? Basically, does it just bolt up? I am still new to rotaries, so I don't even know the difference between s4 and s5 engines other than the fact that the later second gen turbos made 18 or so more HP? Also, would the Japanese versions of these engines be the same? Would they just drop in?

thanks for helping a new Turbo II owner

yes, it is a bolt in swap, well sort of. You are going to need to reuse your front plate from the S4, and the OMP. Along with your S4 intake manifold, and all the sensors. you can, and should use the S5 turbo and manifold that comes with the S5, it just takes a bit of fennesse with the oil lines.

My my my...

seems a LOT of these threads have been coming up lately.

This swap really isnt the best idea, but it can work. You need to use all your s5 parts on the s4 block, except front counterweight and flywheel.

so why is it a bad idea? Does the 87 tII engine (that I do own) have as much "potential" as the s5 engine? (read boost, psi)

thanks again guys, just checking out my options if I were to ever replace my engine, wondering if I should just go ahead and get an s5

The S4 engine has lower compression rotors, which are more desirable for boosted setups. Get a S4 engine, and a S5 turbo.

nah I just got in a hurry and transposed s4 and s5 in my reply, I understood what he was trying to do.

Regardless, why so much engine swapping/series swapping? Why not just buy the engine that is meant to be in the car and plug it all in?

Speaking for people like myself, cause we want to be different.

For the same reasons someone puts a 350 into a S10. To go faster, but be different.

But, an s5 engine is basically the same as an s4 engine, but just different enough to require a shitload of work to make it all work in an s4 car. A gain of 10hp *might* be realized by using an s5 block over an s4. Your case is an exception, you stand to gain 25+ hp out of the RE swap, probably much more depending on your mods. But, the difference between an s4 13BT and s5 13BT is minimal as far as performance.

ya I thought you just fliped them

I am thinking of doing this myself.
the reason why I want to is because I'm getting a j-spec engine so I thought that I would have a better chance of getting a lower milage engine(because it would be newer) I would also get the better turbo.
I plan to run premix so I don't need the omp. didn't the j-specs have a bigger intercooler? I also plan to use a standalone EMS.

Everyone claims the intercooler is bigger, but it sure as hell didnt look bigger to me. If it is bigger, its not enough to make a difference.

I already have an H22 in a civic, so I actually want to stick to same/similar engine in my car, but I didn't know that sticking a JDM engine would be such a hassle, guess I'll just stick to rebuilding my engine when it goes lol... or just get the same year

I didn't know it was lower compression, good ****

on a side note, I just wired up the second stage to my TurboXS dual stage boost controller, it switches from two different boost levels from inside with a flip of a switch, I'd recommend it if anyone's looking into one

will the S5 turbo just "bolt up" to my exhaust manifold? are there other turbos available that litteraly bolt in, no other parts needed, it literally fits in the same location?

thanks again guys

you need the s5 exaust manifold..i am currently doing the swap myself..the s5 turbo and s5 exaust manifold are needed on an s4 engine, but they bolt right up.

Speedy's right, you need the turbo and the manifold, because the manifolds have a different angle, in relation to the block. If you put a S5 turbo on your S4 manifold, it would probably hit your lower intake manifold. You'll see if you ever do it.

wtf?

ok, I've DONE THIS SWAP. I used an s5 (1991) rebuilt jdm core in my 1988 10AE. I used JUST the core of the s5. I had to swap front covers and OMPs. That's all. Really. Everything else bolted up, even my EGR.
