S5 NA code 11 after reinstalling dash

Okay, so I pulled the dash to replace the heater core. When I reinstalled the dash I now have error code 11, engine thermosensor.
I followed the instructions for removing and reinstalling the dash as listed here: https://www.rx7club.com/interior-ext...nd-gen-828071/
All of the plugs behind the dash went back together fine, all of the controls work (I have heat, the blower works, etc.), except now when I turn the fan on it moves air just fine but the engine rpms jump by 500-750, and of course that nasty CEL. I have reset the ECU, no luck. Aside from the rpm jump the engine performs just fine.
The battery was disconnected throughout the dash removal and reinstallation process, and I took my time doing it to make sure everything went back together as it should. Is there something behind the dash that relates to the engine thermosensor that I missed, or isn't in the dash removal instructions? It seems like these events are directly related, but could it be coincidence that the thermosensor failed at the same time, or somehow became loose enough for the computer to think it's disconnected?

Of course, the other problem is that the thermosensor itself has been discontinued, and the part is basically impossible to find, should I need to replace it.

If anyone has any experience with the error code 11 in a non-turbo FC, or had RPM jump issues related to the fan blower, I would greatly appreciate any advice. Thanks for your time.

*Update*
I realized that the A/C light does not work on the control unit, and in fact it was running. I have not yet overhauled that system so I'm not surprised about the rpm jump/ hunting that's going on, I've read some other stuff about that. I must have accidentally pushed the button when reinstalling the control unit. Without the A/C on it seems to run like normal. Which leads me to believe that indeed the engine air thermosensor has gone bad. Anyone out there have one?

FSM not very helpful

I should have mentioned that the FSM does not provide much insight for the engine air thermosensor. (Test for resistance and replace.) It's pretty frustrating that I stand a good chance of causing a new vacuum leak getting to the thermosensor even if I could get a new one, which I can't. I guess I should count my blessings that performance isn't affected in the NA, I understand that this is much bigger problem for the TII.
