S5 N/A Throwing codes 12, 73...

Alright I'm planning on rebuilding this engine pretty soon, maybe.

But lately I noticed the check engine light blinking... specifically when I'm on the freeway in 5th gear at about 90mph, if I go on the throttle for like 10 seconds straight, then just completely let it off it seems to be an almost for sure way to turn the check light on for a few seconds at least. Turns right back off when I apply even a little fuel again.

I came home and checked the codes (shorted that pin to the body and counted the flashes) and it comes up with 12 and 73.

So what's up?

Also one more thing I noticed, unknown if it's related... at idle... every few seconds, maybe 4 seconds, it seems to hesitate for just an instant... like it's idling fine, and it stumbles for one firing and then goes back to normal.

My BAC is a complete goner right now too, haven't had a chance to clean it out... but I don't use air conditioning anyway.

BTW so you guys don't have to look it up, Code 12: Throttle Sensor - Full Range, Code 73: Injector - Rear Secondary

I'm guessing if my secondary injector is clogged (previous owner liked to run premix... o_O) it's coming up when I'm on the freeway... but why only when I let off the gas? =/

I don't get it.

Heh... I've been through this 73 code stuff before. Read this thread: https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...highlight=code

If it turns out its a true 73, you're either running the rear rotor very rich or very lean. both cases aren't great and you are suffering power loss becuause of it. Running that lean (think half the injected fuel isn't making it to the chamber) isn't happy for the engine at all.

Lol yeah I'm not retarded, it's a true 73.

I let the codes go around a few times just to be sure.

Does this mean that the injectors are likely to be dirty? or a more serious problem?

Should I try some injector cleaner?

When one of my injectors failed (injector had a broken connection within the injector itself) I didnt get a code for it. It's an electrical problem so I dont think injector cleaner will help. Just follow the test procedures in the FSM.

dirty? meh, try shorting. That code usually only gets thrown if the injector isn't plugged in or the ECU notices a messed up resistance from it. Injector cleaner won't solve this problem.

Out of curiosity, when you hit 3800 rpm, does the car bog a bit? This is when the secondaries would come online... or supposed to if they worked right.

First off though just makes sure its plugged in and the wire isn't cut or anything. If it looks ok, grab the FSM and start debugging it. The FSM will tell how to test the fuel injectors. Ahh.. I believe the "eletronic fuel injection and emissions" chapter or something like that is the one you'll want...

Hope you own a multimeter...

Nope, no 3800 hesitation at all...

I got a cheap DMM... ;( hopefully it works out. heh

I'll check out the FSM, I downloaded it... so I should have it around somewhere.

I have the 3800 RPM trouble just starting, after car is run for a while it gets better, Should I change fuel filter and try gas injector cleaner?

Try redlining her for a bit. If that doesn't work, get some fuel injector cleaner in it, and redline i a bit more on the highway. That actually worked for me, I guess on mine the injectors were only slightly dirty, because to be honest the cleaner doesn't do a whole heck of a lot. Do a search for exactly how much you need, you have to use a LOT more than is recommended for a rotary, and there's only a few kinds that you can stick in there.

If that still doesn't work and you're sure nothing else like grounding is causing the hesitation, get the injectors professionally cleaned.

*edit* Oh yeah, check your spark plugs and make sure they are ok too.

Clean the ground from your engine to firewall.

HAH!

Awesome. I have been running without a rear secondary injector for probably three weeks.

Plugged that back in...

Alright. Now I'm more concerned about the Code 12... angle sensor.

Does this have anything to do with a little coughing thing my car seems to do?

It does it fairly randomly... at idle. Seems to especially like to do it when I tap the gas repeatedly... don't ask why I was doing that, I had a feeling tapping on the gas pedal fast would make it do it more, and it did heh.

I thought it was always at the same interval, but it changes... I got no clue, I'd almost say it sounds like it was starved for fuel just real quick and momentum gets it to the next face and that catches it and keeps it running. ??????

Any ideas?

****, while I'm at it... anyone have a picture of the BACV plug? That bastard is ELUDING ME.

not angle sensor, TPS. big dif

Adjust it and see if it fixes itself. the TPS may be spiking causing the check light.

Doh! I almost went checking on the angle sensor too! =O

TPS huh? That sounds less serious.

Actually I just searched it... and maybe this is why I get backfire occasionally?

I think I might leave it this way... ;D lol, I like shooting flames occasionally.

Any reason this would be bad to leave it this way? Guessing my stutter-y idle is from this.... maybe I'll just fix it... or leave it. I plan to do a complete shell swap soon... whatever is causing it will probably get resolved just out of being taken out and swapped.
